The rad was fine when it had a blast with the pressure washer. The back of it was so coated in mud, I thought it best to take it off!
Car isn't working coz Kris changed the ATF as it was a nice brown colour and the torque setting for the gearbox sump bolts is wrong in the Haynes manual it said 8Nm, but when Kris got home, he checked his data disc and it says 5Nm.
The gasket blew and she wet herself when I stopped for petrol. The petrol station near Box Hill at the roundabout ended up with ATF all over the forecourt. Lovely! Mind you, I had to throw sand over it meself. You think they would help a ladydee!

hey guys

want a list of what went wrong on the way back from kris' place?

brakes started going, losing brakes fast. couldnt work it out as no other problems. took it easy when i got onto the m25. started pulling to the left so onto the hard shoulder. left front disc brake was ****ing scorched. called up kris, and he said front disc brake seized. goodo thatll be a bloody slow drive home then. was boiling the brake fluid so lost all other brakes again

carried on, constantly being pulled to one side, after 2 miles i pulled over to cool them down. put water on em - good little film of them steaming. went to pull off again and something made a funny noise and there was no drive. called kris who said chuck it in diff, and that worked, so something means the front tyres are no longer recieving drive.

goodo i carried on, 2 miles down i notice a light by my front tyre, so pull over, and what i assume to be the grease was on fire on the brake. wahey put that out, got another 50 yards and it pulled in to call it a night after it lurched to the left so violantly and then nearly ran into the back of a dozing trucker that swung onto the hard shoulder, bricked himself and then just stopped to a near standstill - with me pumping the brakes and nothing. slip road saved my arse - as did no traffic at the top of it.

AA to the rescue - and a quality guy - who owns landys himself. gave him this sie coz he is interested to know what my series II turns out to be also. so hope to see him here, and maybe coming out laning with us sometime!

all in all a mad night!

ooh and my front left tyre is now nicely skewed - i dont know why as i didnt try looking last night and im just off to bournemouth now. will see|!!

May the gods be with you, when you plan on going on this African trip.

if you can't get from Surrey to High Wycombe on tarmac then goodluck with African soil.

Seriously, Sounds asif you have a collapsed wheel bearing and broken CV to loose drive. Was your steering notchy? or har to turn at all after you lost drive? Was there any noticable clicking noise on full lock before you lost drive?

You need to go through your mota with a fine toothcombe checking everything doing it all again right and keeping out of the tough stuff if you plan on doing any milage. Offroading kills cars unless maintainance is upped Alot!

Offroad/water/mud = at least a 3 hour clean and look over minimum, Grease Props and steering components.
Offroad/deep water/deep mud = 6 hour clean up strip down, some oil changes, look over everything oil everything. Grease Props/Steering components.

Missing out even a clean can cause problems. Many people will say na I never clean my Landy they shouldn't be cleaned La La La. These people are usually the same people changing diffs, engines or blowing up drivetrain every outing. Always wash the underside, axles, brakes, props engine compartment and all systems relating to the vehicle like rad (sorry Pintsize). (I've been there comming back from Billing on the hottest day of the year rad caked in baked on mud Roof off hammering it down the M1. Waiting at the side of the road letting the engine cool down before refilling the rad with the contents of the rear, coke, Stella, and fanta).

If we worked out just how much time our landys cost us we would never venture off the tarmac. Jai

Don't think pouring water on hot brakes is such a bright idea. Ok if it was on fire then you have to but you could of took the wheel off when you noticed them binding and pushed the pads apart and made sure the pistons in the calipers were able to move and not seized out.

I think the previous owner took the life out of your landy in the African trip they did. Still everything can be sorted. Jai

I would be looking at:

Brake disk,
Pads,
Possibly hub,
stub axle,
Bearings,
CV joint,
Caliper seals if not complete caliper,

Basically everything from the axle end (7 bolts, or oldertype 6 bolts that atach to the axle tube) outwards needs replacing/careful inspection and rebuilding.

Also take careful note of:

Diff oil,
Inner shaft (inspect carefully),
Check diff for damage,

At a guess I would say heat has built up so much, boiling the grease in the hub bearings and CV. then running them not lubricated i.e. metal on metal they then let go.

I take it you didn't feel the brakes binding or notice the hub was getting hotter at all before it pulled to the nearside?

Jai

Thanks for your well meaning comments about my rad Jai, but you and everyone else may have realised by now that I am not your average woman driver with no knowledge of cars.
Whaddon has the most fantastic pressure washer (think ****ing in the snow), which didn't even touch the sides. It took for Kris to take the rad out to get it clean, as the back of the rad is fooking impossible to get to (the fifth time the rad had been cleaned in a week). I had a whale of a time!
Sorry to break this to you, but you do come across in these recent posts as a tad condencending. Tone it down a bit.:rulez:

i was pointing out the fact that its all too easy done, we have all been there. Simply put, lack of maintainance will decrease life expectancy of components. And as an example me doing exactly that comming home from billing not fully cleaning my rad. If you read most of my posts i come across arsey thats the way its always been and for that i am sorry.
I do disagree tho when working (i suspect it was damaged when you were there) the pressure washer at whaddon is great. gets my chassis very clean indeed. I wouln't use the pressure washer for the rad tho too much pressure will start bending fins. Opposite there is a tap that is perfect for washing out rads it takes ages and is a complete bastid damn near impossible if its baked in. The only sure way to clean it completly is doing what you did and remove it from the vehicle to wash out. P.s on another note does anyone fancy halping some disabled ramblers clear some lanes to allow them access with their powered buggies? Im waiting for a list of ROW to help them with.

Jai

hi medusa ill pm you the email i got last night he did say he was in the surrey area but until i get a reply about specific RoW i can't do much. Ill send that pm tonight away from my comp for a bit Jai

Might have worked ok for you but unfortunately Jai the pressure washer at Whaddon wasn't working properly, probably due to overuse! Handed the gun to the next guy without taking my hand off the trigger coz as soon as you did that, the water disappeared! Mr V did say Whaddon stuffs your Rad up with mud and Devil's pit destroys it.

I have my faults and failings like the next person, but I've never been one to beat around the bush. If something needs saying, i'll say it. I understand that your comments are meant to update your fellow offroaders of the benefit of your knowledge. Being arsey does no one any favours! :focus:

Well carpy i hope i have helped you, with diagnosis and mabe prevention for any future problems. If you want to see a sorted mota talk to classic kev his rangerover is maintained to the highest level and his breakdowns are non existant. Its no co-incidence he puts the time in and keeps on top of it and his rangerover pays him back with the upmost reliability.

Ignore all previous posts i have not got a degree in mehcanics and therefor I cannot possibly comment. I suggest you take it to a qualified and experienced land rover mechanic probably best to goto a dealer, with a known history and pay them to do all work on your vehicle this will be done to spec correctly and warranted.
As for abuse I have probably opened myself up for more. But helping Carpy get back on the road, without spending a fortune and getting it all sorted that was my only intention. If ive upset you pintsize im sorry still scratching my head to exactly what offended you.

As for helping our ramlers. Its our duty to maintain our lanes and get on with our fellow RoW users even if they do not feel the same way. I truly believe this. Jai
