Hi!

What do you guys think about this?
He is asking €150 (£125) but I could probably knock him down a bit
Its here in Portugal so good for me
Looks like steel replaces plastic bit - Too heavy? - Rust?
Very difficult to get hold of one down here so I am ninterested
What do the Gentlemen think?

Wow that is a right Frankenstein job, what use will it be because it will not keep any water grime mud etc from getting to the underside of the engine., even be a mud trap to be honest, most people modify the under tray so just the plastic part is removable instead of the whole frame, i bet that is heavy, good for off road but only in a dry climate, even the the dust that will get between those slats would be unreal.

Are they different between different engined FL1 pre-face lift?
And are the pre and post face lifts the same?
Everything is so cheap in the UK :(

actually I'm going back to plan A - I know someone with the Ally bits and I will most probly laminate something up or get a bit of plate and make the missing placcy bit
Yep - it’s the ally bits you need really - the ‘frame’.
 
Years sgo peeps would get 2 sheets of 4mm steel and cover their own guard. 4mm is workable and benderble, ish, at home.
 
He replied with the weight, it was 18 kg
But if people are using sheets of 4 mm steel, I guess weight isnt an option
Tbh I only thought of the extra stress on the mountings, as its not much compared to the car weight

I'd like to have a go at a GRP version, onto the Ally frame bit (when I get one) got stuff for that at work and its my thing
Easy to mould in corrugations or even 'top hat' stiffeners too so doesnt have to be too thick despite lower stiffness than steel
Kevlar is well overrated and carbon no advantage and way more expensive in this application

If I can mange to borrow one, I could use and original plastic one as a mould

What a weird abomination!
As mentioned a sheet of Alloy (from a scrap metal place) would do the same job with a fraction of the weight. I did this a few years ago and used the car for off roading a few times and it worked a treat.
 
Well, in the end, I got him down to €100 which is around 80 quid and I will make up a new bit to replace the centre drainage grill bit since I couldnt find another one around her that didnt need to be shipped in.
Not sure whether to make a GRP one or an Ally one. I have Glass at work, but not sure on resin, and not sure what Ally is available here and how much it is
You guys up there back in Civilisation dont realise what an amazing range of offers on everything you have and how cheap and effortlessly and quickly found, ordered and delivered it is

wouldnt they have been horrendously heavy, 1 sqm 8 mm steel weighs 60 kg, I'd worry about the mountings bolts /threads and it would be like driving with someone sitting on the bonnet

Even one sheet of 4mm steel would be overkill as Freelanders are not that heavy.
GRP would work but is brittle so I'd go for steel if ally isn't an option.
Can you do a Google search for metal recycling or scrap metal places local to you. That is how I found the place that sold me the sheets of ally. I even returned a year or two later and got sheets 3m x 4m that I used to panel my trailer. They were a bit bashed up but still did the job.

Yer don't need much metal. Increase the bolt size or add more. When yer whack it oft road it's strength yer need to protect it.
 
OK, so I have been given an opportunity to just swap that Frankensumpguard for a standard one

I have been told that the guards were different between engined models (mine is td4) , but they will fit on different models

This is appealing to my lazy easiest path side

I am only likely to go down sandy tracks every so often, not climbing boulder fields

Should I take this offer, or would sticking an ally plate on my frame be by far the better option?

Being a lazy sod I'd take the swap. If you decide down the line you don't like it for any reason then remove the steel and replace it with ally.

Sorry I thought you were saying you could get the weird one by giving them you're standard one. I forgot you already got it.
If you already have the weird one then keep it and use it. Maybe put something thin and light over or under it so it still works as a splash guard.
 
Great minds, I was just posting to say i thought of putting some rubber flooring material over it and using it!

I also thought that it feels heavy at 18 kg (the whole thing, frame and Franky bits), but how heavy is a nornal standard one, anyway?
Does anyone know, please?
 
Without removing it no but less than 18kg. At a guess maybe between 5kg and 10kg
I very much doubt you will notice the extra weight though, apart from every time you need to remove and refit it of course ;).
Rubber matting may not play nice at 70mph. I was thinking of something like alloy from a road sign or plastic from an old car under tray or maybe make something bespoke from fibreglass.
