Sump bolt possibly sheared / stripped fix or risk leaving?

So I checked it this morning and yes it is leaking, probably 3 or 4 drips a day, so I'm going to try and fix it next weekend.

If the bolt is 1/4" bsp then what size do I want to need to tap it out with? Sorry bit of noob when it comes to tapping things. ;)

Any help is appreciated

1/4 bsp is 13mm ish diameter ,so 13 mm recoil kit or drill out to 14mm and tap 16mm
 
I think I will put in a drain plug in when I fix it. I was just looking at them.

So I need to drill the hole with a 14mm bit then tap with a 16mm and put in a 16mm drainplug. I think I can handle that! I really don't want to bugger it up as taking the sump off in the street outside my house will be a major pain in the arse! :)

no James said a recoil this is a Special thread that is like a spring with a tool to insert it read again !
 
you wont be able to fit aftermarket plug if you change thread ,you probably find second hand sump as cheap as tap or recoil kit
 
I hope you put a new washer on when you put the sump bolt it , you can try anew bolt next time you change the oil and see how bad the thread is you could be lucky and have a worn bolt thread rather than sump thread, if its not so bad one of those drain plugs and pipe with some lock tight and you might just get away with it at least you won't have to undo it from the sump again with the drainer type plug.

thread sizes are not my strong point I know its a 19mm hex bolt so i guess whatever Equivalent thread size to that bolt anyone ?? Probably is sump

It's 1/4" BPS which equates to about 13mm as far as I can work out. That's why I thought the M15 kit should do it? I don't want to make the situation worse for myself :)

yea I forgot there is two sizes for a defender you can go bigger obviously but not smaller look up recoil kit then you can choose of have a choice of differnt sizes in the kit
