I've got a SIII 2.25 diesel which I've decided to replace with a 2.5 NAD. I've got the workshop manual and disconnected/removed eveything I can see that needs disconnecting. I put the hoist on, got the mountings out, and there I'm completely stuck. Are there any tricks involved? This is a first time project for me. Is it just gunge or corrosion round the bell housing? Do I whack it with something, if so where to avoid damage?

I've already tried plan B - take the engine out with the gearbox all together, but I can't find the balance point - it still weighs a ton at the back, and I don't think I'll ever get it all back in again.

Any ideas out there.....

best splitting it from the gearbox unless you want to dismantle lots - prop the gearbox when you lift the engine

make sure you have all the bell housing bolts out and then go around and ensure every wire, cable and hosethat might stop it is off.

then take the weight of yer injun on yer hoist and pull, wiggle, grunt, swear tug at it. violently. it will soon pop out

Thanks guys. In the end I jacked it up in the middle, and whacked the end of the gearbox down. This made a tiny gap which I put a shim in, then I jacked up the gearbox, and got a shim in underneath, and so on, until I got it split. I just didn't expect it to be so tight.

Some expert may have glued the bugger on with Loctite or summat.

Is it on the floor now?

yer mean like rig ass

That is a shocking allegation to make.

What I may or may not mean is for me to know.

Just wait till he hears about someone tipping raw molybdenum disulphide powder into a noisy overdrive! This isn't any old snake oil! This is BLACK MAGIC!

Speaking of which I have today confirmed a deal for a Fairey OD that I shall fit to my 1969 lightweight. I want a Shorrock supercharger next if anyone knows where there's one to be had.

Failing that its TurboTime I'm afraid to say.

PS - I sure hope he doesn't point out it's a petrol 2.25 and can't be turbo-ed. If he does, he'll be proved wrong again. I was at that in 1968!

Yep - it's out:)

But another interesting thing - the manual says put a 1" block of wood under the bell housing to support the gearbox, but when I finally got the engine out, the box tipped back, another reason it might have jammed. So it'll needs a jack to hold it down when I refit the engine.

In the past have come across people using silicone sealant (the stuff you get from B&Q ,Halfords etc)as a gasket substitute.
Does the job but is a pig to seperate as most of them are adhesives:
