been getting a knock on full turn, feels like a knock/pop/thud from behind bulkhead near my feet. new swivels, bearings, HD steering arm and track rod arm with new ends and it's still there.
steering box and relay have oil in them... what else gives a Klonk from steering cause I'm bamboozled now!

1978 s3 2.25 petrol

thanks

cheers james, forgot to mention new hardy spicer ujs on front prop, front axle was stripped and overhauled.. deffo feels steering related :(

Check that the steering box and it's brackets are not loose, they are known to be an issue if PO has been messing.

Check that none of you suspension bushes are loosened knackered...both the ones through the chassis and the ones through the springs if the can slide you get a loud clunk when turning. To check Jack up axle until wheel is not quiet off the floor and I sent a bar between chassis and spring and try ans lever apart. Should move a bit but spring back. If it doesn't spring back either the rubber is torn or the whole Bush is sliding. If Bush is sliding a tack of weld on each side should hold it

I need to do one of mine but not been arsed so far...

Mines got gradually worse and I checked it yesterday and it was definitely the bushes.

It's easy to do slacken off nut, undo bolt 3/8" and lever back and forth. The ****part bush has destroyed itself, ironically the one I couldn't be arsed to do on the n/s which is probably as old as the car is fine. I bought these in 2011 and fitted some time in 2012. What's worse is the spare that was left on the shelf in dry storage has started to destroy itself. Rusting between the tube doesn't look like it would last ten minutes so bought some polybush ones ~£20 for a pair instead of £3 but hopefully worth the effort!

Could do without all this - go my new chassis for t'other motor coming in an hour!

what's the official engine mount to chassis bracket bolt size guys, looks like a smaller metric one is in place at moment which may be causing some movement!

Easy way is jack it up, put on axle stands, front and back, put it in 1st and see what wheels move (get someone else to check, dont leave It running without a driver ! )

Also im not too sure about the way the leavers work, but from memory it can stick in 4wd even when the yellow one is up, im sure someone can correct or agree with me on this:)

I can select 4wd by pushing lever down, when I go from hi tom low and back again it pops up as it should.
I know the tyre scrub noise you get if in 4wd from turning but this is a definite knock.
just ordered some proper 3/8 x 1" unf bolts for engine mounts so will report back with findings

Jack one front wheel up and with it in gear should be able to spin wheel it if not its in 4wd.
Without engine running lot safer than Bens method

Nearside one looks like it is not tight get a tape measure out and measure the gaps between both side plates top and bottom each side to compare.should be parallel.
