starting trouble,..... probably a sensor!!

06 Freelander 1 TD4 on occasion it starts like its of a cylinder or running rough and dies out quite soon after, generally starts ok on second attempt, doesn't do it that often and doesn't seem to matter if its hot or cold or how long shes been sitting, had the mini digger on behind her just to see if it was a fuel problem but she pulled like a boss for all the size of her!!
any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Is this a case of getting the fuel pump and injectors done up or is the o ring easy enough to get at and try first?

It's fitted to the high pressure fuel pump regulator. If the O ring splits, it makes the engine difficult or impossible to start.
