camshaft sensor determines position of no 1 piston and is only needed for starting

crankshaft sensor is a real pig to remove /replace, i still have nightmares :eek:

Cheers Ming, i have told the garage and they are looking it over as we speak. If that fails then have you any other suggestions?

ok. . . . . . .so which wun has the start problem that we were spose to be sorting John . . . . . . .i'm all confuse now,dont know ma crank from ma cam now :D :D
 
Hmm changed the cam sensor and was please with myself that I had cured the problem but guess what its no diffrent !, I have either got a duff sensor or its a diffrent fault any thoughts??

It even done it when I started the car from cold turned it around in the drive to load it, 5 mins later there I am cranking for England again, surely the engine could not have got hot in the space of 3 mins turning the car around!!!
 
Willa, Please ignore this reply if you already have your answer. The CKP is the crankshaft sensor and my research tells me this is never at fault for hot start problem. If you lift off the head cover to expose the top of the engine (2 min job) you will see the Cam Sensor almost in front of your face with a single number 10 bolt holding it in and a electronic lead going off to the loom.
If your Landy is 2003 or later its a straight swop. If its 2000 to 2002 you will need to fiddle with the plug that goes into the loom. Cut off the small lip on the plug with a stanley knife and bobs your uncle. I'm non teckie and it only took me 15 mins to change. Some people tell you to change the crank shaft sensor, but my resea4rch has indicated that this is never a problem for hot start problems. Good Luck. Regards

pepe,, when you turn on the ignition can you hear the fuel pumps running, and if so how lond dose it run for ?

check both pumps are working ,let us know

and i did go back and correct the "fuel"typo i didnt see the others, i must be getting dyslexik or blind :)

Yes you can hear fuel pumps running at the rear and under the bonnet, they seem to run for about 25-30 seconds.
I had someone else listen to it the other day on start up and they said it sounds like its starting on two cylinders and then picking up to 4
Its the same when its warmer and its a pig to start, when it does go it runs lumpy, maybe this could be the cause of the exessive smoke on start up.
Any more ideas??
 
pepe, im afraid its a prossess of elimination and its not easy with this type of fault
lets assume you have checked / replaced the following
1, fuel filter
2, fuel pumps
3, glowplugs (are they getting power)
4, camshaft sensor, (this is needed for starting only )

you say it is running lumpy?, well this would indicate injector/fuel problems,
it is not uncommon to have a couple of faults, and the first fault could have been there for quite a while, but when 2nd fault develops things really take a turn for the worst,

what i would do next is , with the plastic engine cover removed, start the engine, unplug the connector to the injectors one at a time for a few seconds,if you have a poor injector , you will notice very little change when you unplug it ,, the bosch injectors need to be kept clean and are prone to fouling,
give this a go, it wont take long and let us know ,,,good luck
 
HOW about one glow plug u/s that seems to fit the pattern of poor starting and smoke. . . .a diesel will start on three plugs if its not too cold . . .jist a thought, , , ,er sorry bout the cam un crank mix up , I'm er stupid space ****. . . .:D :D :D
 
ming,,, had sort of eliminated the glowplugs because of first post, but its got to be worth checking them out and eliminating them as a potential problem,,,
dont be to hard on yerself, im certain yer not stupid,,,, but ****:D :D

"I start her first thing, glow plug light goes out and she fires up straight away, if however I then pop to the shop and she stands for 5 mins the cow will not start."


off to see if i can mod my rear lights using some led s :)
 
Ok me again, have been outside playing,
I have disconected the cam sensor it would not start full stop connected it again and it fired up, when running I pull in turn the injector leads off there was a noticeable engine change so I think these are ok. While playing I have found a in line filter type thingy hanging down the back of the engine by the steering rack, looking from behind the drivers side wheel it goes to a vaccum type valve on the lower LH front of the engine and it ends at the filter should this filter end be conneted to anything ??? its been rubbing on the steering rack rods.
If you turn the ignition on you can hear a noise from it sounds like it matches to the fuel pump. Is this the problem?? my other reason I think it has come from somewhere is it is clean unlike the road dirt around the engine bay.

ER FANKS JOHN [titter] . . . .er Pepe . . . .the filter yer on about is the so called vacuum filter in hangs at rear er td4 engine at lhs it is a open ended filter and should be changed bout 35000 miles but is often disregarded ,to proof this is not a problem just pull it off [wont do any harm] but put it back if it proofs to be OK. . . . .hope this helps earthling:) :) :)

Ming where can I get a replacement filter for this and how much am I looking at?
