well shes been stood all week till today when the first thing i did was replace the knackered thermostat for an 87 degree one for an austin mini :confused: had to modify the stat housing to suit it by making a stainless ring to fit inside there and wedge the stat in place and then had a go at getting her running again

she started without any hickups just smoked till she warmed up and it stayed at half temp on the gauge while i went for a totle round the lanes for a good hour she didnt boil up and the heaters got nice and toasty

fookin winner me thinks :D:D:D:D
 
Glad you've got her sorted. It seems most of these 2.25 diesels seem to smoke a bit until warm. Mine does too a bit. Can't work out why but they seem prone to it. Can't imagine they would have done it from new

i dunno bout the smoke exept all ive got to go on is the fact that my engine is practically brand new and still smokes so i believe they might well have done :)

You might be right. Old technology and all that....not sure anyone on here is old enough to have owned one from new or even worked on one. :rolleyes:
 
Oh we'll, I'll put it down to wear then!
It's only for the first 30 seconds or so. She's as clean as any modern euro box when warm or hot. Not worth pulling things apart just yet me thinks.

You need to find a suitably muddy green lane to celebrate on now - take your camera too :D
 
cheers matey im gonna run it in gently for a couple hundred miles yet just to make damn sure i dont undo any of the hard graft blood sweat n tears that have gone into the engine so far

so i think this weekend ill be trundling down to the post office for a free tax disc and then spending saturday n sunday ferrying all the crap ive hoarded in the sheds and house to the tip and the scrappys ( and on the quiet getting some bits n bobs to make a steel rolling machine for yet another crazy idea i have involving 1" wide steel flatbar hoops ) :rolleyes:

she got leathered the whole 4 miles to the station and back again but she started wandering a little on the way back ( is there a way of tightning the steering relay box to take the slop out as all the ball ends are new and theres absolutely no play anywhere else )

if it does just need an adjustment its gonna get a reet workout over the weekend shiftin me scrap iron to the crushers :cool::cool:
 
Make sure wheels are straight ahead
Slacken off the locknut on side of box (lock nut)
Nip up the adjuster to reduce the play
Tighten up the locknut
Replace cover
Tea & biscuits

I think it's recommended not to over tighten or steering becomes heavy and puts excess wear on the box.
Mine drove better for tightening but replacing swivel assembly and setting bush preload made the biggest difference.
