Started to fit the Southdown snorkel ..

That first picture is my problem with buying a snorkel.

Sure it looks really good, but it's just a couple of bits of pipe and some jubilee clips.

I would buy one if it would be less hassle than making one, but it seems just as much grief either way.

Anyway, I'm not going to fit one for a while yet, other things higher on the list so I'll just get my coat ;)

Now that I've fitted one after buying it, I agree .. with the following observations.

I couldn't get the 1.5 metre of flexible pipe at the correct diameter for less than £35, I even bought the wrong stuff at one point. The Southdown supplied flexy pipe is correct size to fit inside the airbox tightly and is pretty robust stuff, way better than most I've seen. The stainless tube was similarly expensive to buy. The brackets could easily be made up, I guess and I swapped the screws for Rivnuts and better Mushroom Allen screws.

However, the 'big thing' is the odd little grommet .. the round thing in the third picture down, to the left of the sealer. This attaches over the airbox inlet and pipe and neatly joins the two and provides a much larger sealing surface for sealant .. ;) I guess it could be made up easily if you have a lathe available and a chunk of plastic, but it makes it dead easy to seal properly.

i used 2inch plastic piping from b&q £22 all in, it appears to be able to do its job but when it gets busted/ripped off i may do another diy job but i'll have to arsed to take the wing off and sink the pipe

Yeah, I'd fiddled with the plastic pipes, but just couldn't work out a neat solution to getting it through the wong .. and I didn't want to take the wing off. ;)

If i could justy the expense id have gone for the same as uv got... i had to cover most of my diy in sikaflex which is a little messy to say the least

right peeps, for those that are wondering how to route their breather's here's how i've done mine, fisrt i fixed the 4-1 connecter to the bulk head with cable tie's (pic 1) then ran the 6mm pipe through the rubber bonnet shut,it's like it was made for it and give's the pipe a little protection (pic's 2-4) where it exit's the rubber i ran it up behind the back of the bonnet and up the snorkel tube and fed the excess in through the intake grill (pic's 5-7) both my gearbox breather's came up the left hand side of the engine just under the fuel pump the axle breather's ran up the left side and were held to the front radius arm's and rear trailing arm's with some neat little cable tie clip's so i reused them with new tie's (pic's 8-10) and there you have it:D

i tried to get a few pic's of the breater's but my phone isnt to good in low light.

It's also likely that the air coming from a snorkel is far 'cleaner' and possibly marginally cooler, than air coming from the wheel wells .. especially on dusty lanes .. ;)

My Southdown has given me a lot of faithful service. I've not had any loss of power on Mucky... and apart from the time It got snagged down a tight lane and got ripped clean off the A pillar (I genearally fit weaker screws on pillar mounts, just in case) it's done well. Even then I just gaffer taped it to the pillar again and carried on :D

Might be time to fit a new one though, it's looking a bit..... used

On the upped power front, there is also a slight ram effect with the snorkel facing forwards, especially as speeds increase. Not sure that even at 70 into a headwind it would be enough to give an extra 8 ponies worht though.

Bit off topic, well sort of anyway, anyone got measurements of the A-pillar mount off a southdown snorkel? I've got a southdown wing moulding to keep everything nice and tidy but could do with a more precise bracket. Anyone got a tape handy? Cheers.
