SRS Light

I had this very prob on mine. Turned out to be a fuse that i thought was ok. It was found when an auto electrician was fitting a new stereo. It was good news as i was trying to sell it but everyone kept asking why it was on. i have now kept it and am back in love with it. Shes old but goes like a good un! Nice
 
My '04 Discovery SE7 is the 1st British car since my late '60s love affairs with my MGBs, Sprites, Midgets, and my one XKE. I thought advances in technology would have vastly improved the wiring. What kind of masochist would own a LR? Oh wait! That would be me! Anyway, I registered today after reading all the threads about the SRS warning light. Mine started intermittent warnings about a week ago (about the same time my ABS, downhill control and traction control lights came on). The ABS light was due to a broken sensor harness @ the left rear. I had a local garage check it and repair ir with a new sensor. I'll get my 'baby' back today and will check everything mentioned here. I'll let you know what I find. As a last resort, I'll have to take it to the one and only 'stealer' in town - $120 an hour with a minumum of 2 hours diagnostics.

Big yellow co:Dnnectors behind glove box and under front seats. Switch ignition OFF and wiggle them about.

My has been off the road for three weeks, for pre MOT work. So I got all the welding done, plus some bushes.
Get the car to the MOT station 15 minutes down the road, and the SRS light decides to come on during the test. It was off all the way there and all the way back!
So now back home. It’s intermittent. Then constant.
I knew about the yellow plug behind the glovebox and under the steering wheel. Both of those are good/ clean connections, no damage. Checked the fuse and swapped it out to be sure.

But the yellow plug under the passenger side front seat is news to me! The seat never really moves, though I fiddled the wires, then moved the seat forward, and the light is off now. So that’s looking like the culprit.
Hopefully it will stay off for the retest tomorrow.

If you can get the fault codes read, they will tell you exactly where the problem is. There are a number of possibilities, with the under seat plugs (Driver and passenger), and the steering wheel rotary coupling being the most notorious on Discovery 2's at least.

Mine was on constantly, and was resolved by installing a pre-owned seat belt pre-tensioner.
 
Ok, interesting. So that’s why there are air bag cables under the seat. I did wonder why on Earth they were there.
So potentially there’s a wire from the seat belt buckle to the air bags/ SRS cable.
I did not take the trim off to really look. I only poker my hand through. Though I have had it off in the past.

I tried my code reader, though I didn’t realise until now. But there’s no SRS feature on there. So I will get it to the garage at some point.

Yes. I did think the clock spring/ rotary coupling was possibility, but I tried turning the wheel left to right and it made now difference. I have done one before on a Jaguar too. But they was on constantly.

Those are not air bag cables, they are connected to the seat belt pretensioners which are pyrotechnic devices and they should pass the system's self test by returning a 2 - 2.5 ohm resistance to the ECU so a bad contact in one of them would turn the warning on...unless the pretensioner module is gone
 
Ok yes. It’s all linked to the SRS light on the dash all the same though.
So mine light stayed off and it’s gone through the MOT retest since moving the seat forward a bit. I even moved it back, after the test and it’s stayed off.
Now I don’t know whether it’s worth going back under the seat to look for any possible reason for the poor connection issue? Or just leave it as is now. With the possibility the issue could return in the future?
Or leave it as is and hope it stays away.
 
Yes, that’s what I was thinking. Intermittent is not a word you like to hear next to the word eiectrics.
Funny how these things tend to appear right around MOT time.
Well, here’s to another year of motoring until it’s back to the Pre Mot scramble. Hopefully not welding next time.
 
I've got this SRS light on mine I've plugged it into my Nanocom to see if I could get a fault but no faults showing
 
the SRS DCU is not a very reliable unit and it has a strange diagnostic protocol... is the light permanently on?... if yes unplug one of the pretensioners and see if you get an open circuit code for that one or not
 
Yes, worth checking the connections to the seats, these often cause problems with SRS lights.
Cannot agree with this enough. Mine comes on all the time and it is always the wires to the plug under the drivers seat, this is the right hand seat as I am a Brit!
I have removed one and spliced it so it must now be the only one remaining that connects throught the yellow connector.
