Hi Guys,

Just a quickie - The SRS light is on on my ex police P38, it always has been, but before I head down the diagnostic road for faults I have been told that the police may well have "disconnected" the airbags.

If this is the case, I would suggest it's highly probable and I am only the second owner of the car, could anyone hazard a guess as to where the airbags may have been disconnected so I can check this before look for other known and well documented issues?

Aren't there two bulbs in the SRS light? If one bulb fails the other comes on permanently. Worth a look before you blow your head off.

What year is it? Some have side airbags indicated by a tab on the seat back.
I'm not aware that the police would disconnect airbags, they are so H&S aware.
If side airbags are fitted the usual problem is the connectors under the seats (Yellow).
Next most common is the rotary coupler behind the steering wheel.
Low battery voltage can also trigger a fault as can one of the two bulbs in the dash being faulty. Does it have the "Airbag Fault" message on the display?
Before doing anything, disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes. Make sure you have the EKA and radio codes available.
If it's nothing obvious then you will need diagnostics.
Put you location in your signature, there may be someone nearby with diagnostics that would help

They don't like things blowing up in their faces, as so often happens :D
 
Can't think why the police would do that. Best is diag, playing with them if you don't know what you are doing can lead to loud bangs.

The car is a Feb 96 build.
The car was in motorway service with WMP from 97 to 99 - disconnecting airbags at this time was not uncommon.
The "Airbag Fault" displays on the dash.
The SRS light blinks then stays on.
It does not have side airbags.
The car has been in storage with the battery disconnected for over a year, the SRS light was on before this time.
It does not have a "blip" key or radio - not one you'd get radio 2 on anyway... :)
I'm in mid-Wales (SY17)

It was out for the show season 2012, what little we had thanks to the rain, but should be out again this year - SRS light permitting!

So it's going to be airbags unplugged, rotary coupler, bulb failure or caused by low battery voltage at some time. Unless of course it's had a shunt.
Buy yourself a Nanocom, diagnostics is really the only way forward.

Or a simple check behind the dash most obvious place to disconnect.

Air bags cost money I guess adding that to police funds could be why also.

If it was built without airbags, either the SRS ECU would be missing or it would be fitted with shunts in place of the airbags to fool the SRS ECU.
Given the Police obsession with elf n Safety, I'd be surprised if the airbags were disconnected, it would leave the force open to huge compensation claims if plod was damaged in an accident:rolleyes:
