My 1986 90 has a squeaky clutch pedal. It squeaks when the pedal goes down, it squeaks when the pedal comes up, it squeaks if the pedal moves quickly, and it squeaks if the pedal moves slowly. If I half-press the pedal and wobble it up and down, it goes squeaky-squeaky-squeaky.

Interestingly, it doesn't squeak on a damp morning, but soon returns to being squeaky after a few miles running.

You'd think it would get on my tits, but most of the time, it doesn't, probably because I've become desensitsed to it. Some of the time, however, it does get on my tits - I notice it most on those damp mornings, when I realise the squeaking isn't there.

Any suggestions as to the cause? I'm guessing it's something around the master cylinder, and that a suitable spray of silicon oil, or smear with silicon grease, (benign on rubber) will cure it.

So far, I haven't taken that plate off the housing/box under the bonnet because I don't have a spare gasket for it - it seems that one must replace the gasket if the cover comes off. It just looks like a housing of some sort, and I don't quite see why it needs to be sealed gasket-tight. Must it be? Could the inside of this housing be where the squeak-squeak-****ing-squeak is coming from?

The frequency is about 1.5 to 2KHz, I reckon. (It's been a while since I last heard a 1KHz test tone, so I'm guessing a bit).

Does that help?
