Spring conversion on L322 2002

+3 the L322 EAS is a tad cleverer than the P38. During braking, cornering and sudden direction changes, the system opens and closes the Cross Link valves, adjusts firmness and stabilises the loaded vehicle corner to maintain stability, cos the L322 is a much more high centred vehicle due to the lack of low down chassis weight like the P38.

Without this stabilising system the L322 could become unwieldy at the more enthusisactic speeds and during adverse weather.

A P38 on springs, whilst not my bag or something I would advocate, is certainly not as dangerous with respect to removing the automatic height control of the EAS....whereas the L322 does rely on the EAS to maintain its stability.
The L322 EAS is also used to level the HID headlamp system....this is required by law, as is a high intensity lens wash for the HIDs too....

Now I am not saying an L322 is a danger in the sense it shouldn't be allowed, I am just saying the EAS system does more than just ride height changes on the L322....heed caution.

Nothing to do with steering, more to do with independent suspension. P38 steering if in good condition is as good as anything else. They are not racing cars after all.

agreed wammers but lets be honest here there have been too many 38s fell into bad hands now at one stage sadly they were peanuts to buy but luckily as with classics aswell they are creeping back up,you me both love our rangies along with say 98% on here but theres always someone who cant even afford the fuel let alone repairs,im not knocking 38s I have enjoyed everyone ive owned & maintained regardless of cost inc classics and tbh when right they are top motors & drive/handle superb but I like to keep up with the times as much as possible & sadly now the l322 if getting to the price bracket for disaster so its time soon for a l405 hopefully in next 2 years :D

hi saint ty for the tech stuff and whilst i dont disagree with any comment you have made there .
what i am finding is it is not suffering any significant body roll , i am a member of the institute of advanced motorists and i drive fire engines on blue lights regularly , it seams very stable , but like any vheicle pushed hard enough it will become unstable , (subaru imprezza sideways at 90 mph through experience ) the lights are working well , maybe they are still leveling as i have left the ride sensors in situ .

there is a long sweeping bend rated at 30 mph i took it this afternoon and it remained stable i was AT 30 honest officer , well i couldne see the speedo as i was concentrating on the bend .

with 33 years behind the wheel i have driven stuff that was far worse cornering , i will when the weather is safe try some braking while cornering ,( anyone want to buy a bent rolled L322 :der::der:) see just how it performs , some of the raised 90's and my mates modded P38 is no where near as stable , i have tested it today at higher speeds and its better than on air whilst it is defiantly stiffer .

I am happy that i did the change up to now

fair play autogas i have to agree i would rather take the spring conversion route than look at a non functioning vehicle doing nothing & going nowhere sat on the drive,tbh i had never heard of spring kits for l322 before & if your happy good luck afterall its you driving it

Many want to own a Range rover but want to maintain it for Clio prices. Can't be done. If you can't do your own maintenance to a good standard, to cut out labour costs, or if you are mechanically inept and can't afford garage fees, maybe they are not the car for you. Many are crap because the owner rates his mechanical skills a lot higher than they actually are, they just get run into the ground bodged to death so to speak. You have also to be carefully who you listen to on here in some respects. You will never soar with Eagles if you are taught how to fly by a Turkey.

for safe and fast cornering in an L322, you have to brake in a straight line, get to your max/optimum speed for the corner adn then gently hold/accelerate round the corner. This is even more important when it's an armoured (4 tonne) version. and just don't attempt a J-turn, unless you want to see the world from a different (upside down) viewpoint!!

I would like to add to this one , I own a garage and i am not trying to run it at clio prices , mechanically inept ?? 32 years experience , the air on these are a pain in the ass and unreliable simple as . if throwing 5 grand at it made it reliable then i would have done so .

The remark was not aimed at you, but seeing as how you have delegated to take on the mantle. If you are incapable of sorting out a reasonably simple system then the 32 years have been a slight waste of time.
 
It only seems unreliable as most L322's are over 10 years old now. So bits like the air struts / compressor will need renewing due to their age. If left to break on their own, to the owner it will seem like it's unreliable.

Preventative maintenance is the key ;)
