Spraying Diesel on Chassis

Hello there im looking for some insight on this, when i was young growing up in South Africa my Dad had 2 series 3s and i can remember him spraying diesel on the chassis twice or three times a year and then driving on a dirt road so dust would stick to it forming a crust, this would prevent the chassis rusting when driving in the salt water at the beach when launching his boat or simply fishing rock an surf.
i've not heard of anyone using this method outside South Africa and was wondering why?

I agree it sounds crackers but its a service offered by 4x4 garages on the coast for the vehicles often on the beach in salt water and seems to have worked.

i have heard of it before but would like to see it work afore trying it

not that i need any rustproofing btw

Ive got Dinitrol on my 90 but it was merely a topic thats been at the back of my mind for a long time and just last week an old friend from SA posted a question on my FB asking what i used here in the UK as his Toyota Hilux had just been done with diesel and was leaving marks on his drive way..

an old series one we had was forever carting cans of diesel, which invariably leaked, splashed etc, the chassis never rotted out on that in our thirty years of ownership, so it does work.

When I was posted up at Kinloss, a mechanic there used to spray old engine oil on the underside of any car he serviced

I tend to use a waxoil and diesel and old oil mix, works quite well, and seems to stay on

I've used old engine oil in the past and it's always worked well, this could be a good enough reason to change my engine oil which is slightly overdue

a lot of the black taxi,s around here have the undersides sprayed with oil , looking at the age of them it must work

What about when it rains or if you go over rivers/puddles? Does it not just wash off?

Yes, thats why it needs to be done at least once a year.
