i take it your talkin about the isolator with the red key for on and off
(battery isolator switch)

Those would work perfectly. I used one that mounts on the positive battery terminal. (similar those advertised for vehicle security) Discarnet??

Only drawback was that I had to open the boot to engage / disengage.

Steve

split charge systems use a relay to control charging of second battery and the linking of both batteries together. An isolator switch is summat totally separate. The relay needs to be able to cope with the maximum charging current - the isolator needs be able to cope with maximum drain! ie an alternator may max out at 65Amp charge, but a winch may draw 150Amps on load.

MHM - I am aware of this. One is controlled electronically, the other by hand. Both do the same job of connecting batteries together when required.

I paid nowhere near that for mine!! You can get the red key isolators for about £5 without leads and a few quid more with leads and terminals.

I have a winch relay somewhere in my garage - will incorporate that on my next project.

finally ordered one its a self switching split charge relay it manages its self
no need to wire to the alternator as it moniters the batteries
cheers for all the help

Here are some pics of the installation - the last three are of the isolator switch. This is on a Disco, so positioning will be different.

you didn't waste any time getting an isolator on your winch MHM. I take it you were subtly persuaded. I see you opted for the heavy duty Isolator switch rather than the red key ones that everybody else uses. :D

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.;)
