Anyone done something like this? a la series style?

I took my spare off the bonnet as you do, and i put it in the rear tub, passenger side leaning up against the side of the tub, around where the roll bar stay attaches (I have an ex-mil 90). To me with it there it just looks 'right'.

I am thinking of attaching a bracket (either bolting or welding) with 2 simple bolts and nuts to utilise the retaining ring off the bonnet mount to secrue the spare wheel.

The bonnet will then probably get the holes filled and repainted. Should make my non-PAS steering lighter lol

Anyone done anything similar?

Would be interested to see photos!

Cheers

Ed

ok definitely like the truck more with the huge wheel off the bonnet, now how to mount it in the tub.

I may see if i can use the bonnet mount and weld it to the roll bar somewhereto hang the wheel on.

Mine sits in the rear tub, I used a ratchet strap to hold it tight and it works well...

In the event of an head on accident that piddly little ratchet strap will do bugger all except allow your passenger to be killed by a 40kg spare wheel and very badly placed high lift jack...... ie the jack will pivot around its centre of mass (the heavy base area) and the upright will come forwards at a huge rate of knots acting like a very blunt scythe through the headrest and passengers skull........ nice

also worth remembering a driver is responsible for their load so that'll be a culpable manslaughter charge to boot..... or at the very least an insurance injury payout refusal for carrying a dangerous load....

same with the number of folks you see with heavy unsecured tool boxes .......

if my rudimentary recollection of physics is correct at 60mph your 40kg wheel will turn into a 1000kg slug into the passengers head / spine assuming a 1 second decelleration and thats into a solid wall... assuming its a car coming the other way then thats only 30mph each.....

likewise cars fitted with halfords ratchet straps attatched to an aluminium tub as opposed to seatbelts on chassis mounts would probably fail an mot

Cheers Steve
