spare wheel mount for boost

I have just bought some boosts for my 110 but when I came to put the new spare on the back door I found it wouldn't fit the carrier already there which had the old steel wheel on it. The carrier fitted looks like this;

and the U shaped bar in the middle is too big to fit through the centre of the Boost alloy. Can I just take the door card off and unbolt the centre U shaped bar and use the three nuts to bolt on the boost or do I need a new carrier? Long term plan is to get a swing away anyway but sods law says if I leave the spare off I will get a puncture. The old tyres are 235/85 and the new ones 265/75 so don't think I could use the steel spare.
 
When a Boost wheel is used as a spare on a Discovery 1 it is held on to the carrier with just the three studs. So I don't see why when the U part of your carrier is removed the wheel can't t be fitted just using the remaining studs.
 
The rolling diameter of a 235/85r16 and 265/75r16 are near enough identical, so would guess that if the steel spare was good enough for the 235/85 then it should be fine for the 265/75 too
 
The u shaped bit is there to help support the weight of the wheel due to the flex in the studs.
I’ve seen disco 1 type carriers on the back door of defenders which would hold the wheel more rigidly.

Would not the width be a defining factor with regard to using the steel wheel ???, when the tyre width is changed, not the wheel diameter.

Another vote here for just removing the U shaped peice. Although I would be worried about the weight of any wheel that size on the rear door, and would look at a swingaway.

Not sure of your point exactly. Was merely pointing out that if the steel spare was OK for use with 235/85 then the diameter of the 265/75 tyre is pretty much the same. Bit like a space saver spare on a car is alright to get you on your way again.

The point is a bit redundant if the OP wants an alloy as a spare though

Realised what you were getting at after I had replied. I meant to use the current tyre on the steel wheel as a spare, not change it for the 265.

My point was , that even if the diameter is acceptable, then width of the rim may not be acceptable to allow the use of a 265 if it has a 235 fitted. Wheel widths change when the tyre get wider.

Sorry I figured that after I'd replied, I added a bit on the end of the last post.

I was just suggesting to use the steel spare with the original sized tyre as a spare, bit like a space saver on a car. Not swap to the 265.
 
Luckily found a mate with a swing away carrier going spare in return for a few beer tokens so will be fitting that when it warms up. Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.
