solid flywheel

No idea directly for a 38, but on other vehicles with dmf they generally are not as nice to drive with a solid fly and also quite often start to suffer with other issues.

thats what im afraid of , i know the 3litre diesel bmw engine cant take a solid flywheel but i dont know about the 2.5 bmw engine

I recently fitted a used dmf as I couldn't find a solid version. Part of the problem is that the clutch disc does not have springs in it which it needs to compensate for dmf. Since doing the job I got a recent edition of car mechanics which had a feature on doing conversions. They got theirs for a Citroen from carparts for less.

Some vehicles are fine. Some run like a bag of nails after one is fitted.

Pays your money etc

The DMF is designed to remove stress from the crankshaft/transmission at low road speeds/engine RPMs in high gears. Much the same job as the springs in the clutch plate did. But supposedly more effectively. It is the work of the Devil and is by far the most stupid innovation introduced in the last 30 years. Just something else to go wrong and cost a bloody fortune to replace. And they do with some regularity.

+1 have scrapped some cars due to the cost of dmf replacements.. insane prices.

thank you all for the replies , i have been told this morning of a person about 50 miles away who welds them, its ok to weld it but how is he balancing the flywheel. i must call to him and find out. cheers guys :)

An alternative to welding is to get it screwed together. Do this on a milling machine with a digital readout. Clamp it and clock it to ensure it is flat. Then have it drillled and tapped for m8 screws in 8 places on the circumference. Fit it with m8 socket cap screws grade 10.8. Again clock it for flatness as the screws are tightened. This method should eliminate the need for balancing. Note that a balanced welded one may still not be flat!!

i have a friend who is teaches engineering and mechanics at a university, he said the same yesterday and told me he will give it a go during the summer holidays. it is worth trying as the flywheel is useless so nothing to loose if it goes wrong and a bonus if it works
thanks mgmayo

except solid isnt as good for the transmission or engine as a dmf ,you cant get enough damping in a clutch plate for a modern high torque diesel

i agree there will be no damping, but a dual mass flywheel is as useless as tits on a bull. why couldnt landrover stick with what was tested and proven a disc with springs and solid flywheel.

The DMF reduces crank flex. The danger is that because a DMF is fitted manufactures make the cranks lighter, so some have a habit of snapping under heavy load.

no its not ,its rare the fail before clutch ,engines got better
