So What's This Noise?

Cats eyes - was having a look through the haynes manual last nt.

Did you get a costing for the CV joint on the front part of the prop shaft or was is for the full front half?

I think it will only be the CV joint on the prop thats causing the noise, in which case your bro with only have to remove the rubber gaitor and CV from the prop.

If the gaitor splits and all grease drys up then the tiny needle roller pins make a.... quote "unpleasant metallic noise plus clonking when taking up the drive". The CV joint splines can also be checked with prop on the car, by moving the shafts in opposite directions and checking for excess movement. The universal joints (either side of the VCU) can be checked by wedging a bar between the joints and looking for excess movement between shaft yoke and coupling flange. Your bro will know what these are.

Will try to get works camera and post pics of an old CV joint - should be interesting (technophob)

Im also interested to see if the dimensions of the CV joint are the same as those CV joints in the driveshaft. To replace a CV joint on the driveshaft you have to buy the whole assemblage... very expensive. If they are the same then it could save a bit of cash for anyone with future driveshaft probs. So you could be helping the masses with a techhie issue :D

Sizes for the front prop bolts are:

E10 Torx bolts + 13mm nut, tighten to 40Nm on refit

Bearing housing:

10mm bolts, tigthen to 28Nm

Rear bolts:

E12 Torx bolts + 17mm nut, tighten to 65Nm

Cats eyes here are the dimensions of the driveshaft CV joint

Would be grateful if you could check these dimensions against the CV from the prop shaft. By my counts there are 22 splines and 22mm across

Also heres a pic of the circlip that might be on the prop shaft. You will see (arrowed) that I have filed a recess on the terminal ends of the circlip so as to provide a 'key' for the circlip pliers. Just used a precision round file - easy to do. The pliers slip off easily and with a recess gives loads more grip - makes it easier to replace clip

LR you are now my hero!!! And I can't thank you enough.

I took the day off work yesterday.............I went to see my mechanic to see if he could fit me in to have a look at the Freaklander. He said to bring it in on Sat, Whilst there I mentioned about taking the propshaft off..........he 1st said no then said that I probably could get away with it. I asked him what he thought the prob could be, he didn't want to commit himself...............can't balme him for that. But he did scare me to death! Said that it could be the IRD....as the VCU had gone it could be that the IRD was on it's way out..........they had just done one on another FL £800!!!
I went home slightly worried..........then I asked my Dad if he was free 2moro (this being Tuesday nite btw)...........
We took the propshaft off yesterday...........lots of swearing and crawling in and out from under the car, but we did it!

And hey presto the noise has gone, car drives fine.........seems lighter on the steering.........could just be my imagination?? But she's fine.

Thank you soooo much for your help and advice.............I will get the new parts in the New Year.........at least now I can pay for my Colt's operation next week! The gaiter at the end of the prop (IRD end) is split so I guess all the oil has come out...........there was a lot on the underside of the car.

I owe you big time! Thanks :) :) :)

lr1796 - Its perfectly safe to run the FL with prop off, just makes it 2WD

LR1796 - The fact that the noise has gone has narrowed it down to the prop itself. If it was the IRD either front or rear then you would still hear the noise. The rear IRD no longer has drive, its just free wheeling but if there were a prob you would still hear the noise in the transmission.

I still hedge a bet (sorry) that its the CV joint on the prop, more precise knackered roller pin bearings due to lack of grease. The pic I posted in the gallery show the CV joint with all the pins removed. Dont know what price they are I would have to source. If your local LR dealer cant source it try Craddocks or Rimmer bros. send me a private msg if you need their e-mail add or contact details. I'm not ruling out the VCU altogether but best to replace a bit at a time and then check each section in turn. This web site tells you how to check the VCU
