Series 2 So what was hanging here then? (Back side of a station wagon question)

G'day Folks,

I was wondering =>

What was hanging here?

This is the back end of my 1965 series 2a Station Wagon.

(I'm trying to work out what's original and what's not - I could imagine a hook for a pick up body being there but I'm not familiar enough with Land Rovers - yet - to figure out what could have been there for a Station Wagon)

Quite possible 'cos I've got reason to believe the vehicle was first registered in Glasgow but I thought Buckfast had a screw top...

most likely the hole for nut bolt that secure rear cover for lamps and wiring

Is there one on the other side? It's too low for a cleat for a tilt and besides you'd expect more than one hole for that or a pick up fixing. It's a bit random looking.

Looks a bit small to be a glory hole so my best guess is a fixing for the rear lamps cover on the inside.

It is for the aluminium cover on the inside that covers the wiring for the rear lights. My 88" has a hole both sides in this postion for them

Ah problem solved - thanks for that everyone.

Funny I was looking through the parts catalogue yesterday thinking what on earth are part numbers MRC2244 and 330205 for?

The bolt that goes through to the cover from the outside of the vehicle is 77869 - that must have been the rusty bit that made the tear drop stain.

Continuing with another backside related question =>

The extra station wagon plate that goes under the and Rover plate (part number 306407) - was this fitted to all Station Wagons?

Mine doesn't have one and there's no evidence of screw holes for it.

Could it be that the 12 seater versions didn't have them? (Because in 1965 it was for the home market exempt from purchase tax with 12 seats and considered to be a bus - so you can't then call it a "station wagon"?)

Handles: (Part number 300816) These fit on the back of the chassis.

Did every type of Series 2a have them?

Were they fitted with the "bumperettes"

Bump for the bumperettes - have I got these all wrong? Are they just for the front and not for the back?

They only go on the rear crossmember, if youre on about the ones that look like handles

Were the handles on the rear cross member fitted to all types of series 2 chassis?

Were those little quarter bumpers (seemed to be called bumperettes) fitted to the front or the rear? Was it a Military lightweight thing?

Not sure on s2 but definitely on my series 3.

The semi-bumpers go above the front bumper being bolted on top of it on military ones

Yep thank you - it has been discovered that these holes are for the covers that go over the back lights on the inside of the vehicle.

OK - bumperettes are out! Thanks.

I'll keep searching for series 2a handles on the rear cross member and to see if all Station Wagons have the "station wagon" plate on the back or not.

Are you sure you're is definitely a station wagon and not a normal 88 someone converted to station wagon spec?

If you look on the Internet there's a vin de coder which will tell you the specs when it left the factory.

Yep absolutely 100% positive that it is a 1965 series 2a LWB (109 inch) Station Wagon in surprising original condition (if you ignore the doors) with a diesel engine first registered in Glasgow but seems to have spent most of its life in Kent.

The rear cross member has been replaced.

That's undoubtedly the reason why there are no handles. But it could be that they were never there for this 12 seater version. I don't know - hence the questions (about that and the station wagon badge)

Just double checking

From the series 2 station wagons I've seen they don't have the handles there. I own a series 2 109 pick up and am a member of the series 2 club. Although this forum has a lot of member with a lot of knowledge if you're looking for answers regarding originality then the series 2 club forum is the place to ask it's free to use like this. What people don't know about series 2 land rovers probably isn't worth knowing when it comes to that forum.

they are fitted to all apart from military as far as i know
