So the Freelander tranmission is C##p, or is it???

Finally got hold of my Freelander today. My first 4x4.

Ok, it has a few problems need sorting, but I'm sure they can be sorted.

Our lovely Yorkshire weather chucked down a couple of inches of snow as I needed to go shopping, but Hey I have a Landy now.

Living at the top of a hill, no which way, a hill has to be climbed to get home.
I enjoyed that smug feeling as I climbed the hill whilst others were stuck.

As regards the few problems....I'm still reading the posts. (don't want to be told to search, lol)
 
I'd echo many of the positive comments about freebys - my wife has been using the FL during the snow hereabouts and found it absolutely brilliant. Drives safely through snow and on ice and is no fuss.
 
Last night I visited the in-laws. Drove gently off the main road into their street and realised that there was a serious ice problem. Gentle on the brakes and the ABS maintainced operation until I'd stopped. So I pulled away again on 1st cog/idle and had no traction at all. The TC had nothing to do as all four wheels were turning at similar speeds. Obviously there was a smidgin of grip as slowly, forward motion was presented. I slowly rolled down the street and a house before theirs, I applied the brake again with a similar stopping experience, coming to a halt where intended. I had fun dropping off the consignment due to the getting from the car to the front door and back again. (You try walking on ice while carrying a frozen turkey!!) Then there was the getting out again as I had come down the slope to the house and obviously had to go back up to the junction. Reverse this time and no problems at all.

Better fun going into work is morning. Got on the approach road and realised it was 'wall to wall' ice again. Came to the end of the road, a junction, and had to turn right into the gate to the car park. So, as nothing was about, it was time for some fun. Started the right turn about five car lenghts from the junction, kicked the throttle and initiated a slide. This took the car gently over the line onto the wrong side of the road. Brought it out of the slide as I crossed the junction and drove through the gates into the car park. Totally mad but enjoyed that I did! :D:D:D
 
Hear hear to the praise of the Freelander. Now the snow has mostly cleared around here I can safely say I have been far happier in my FL1 in these conditions that I would have thought possible.
If I have a criticism it is that it has been too good. Its abilities to progress through without fuss might instill too much confidence when it comes to stopping, lets face it once all your wheels are locked up it don't matter what you drive.
Curiosly I have read a couple of reviews recently by died-in-wool tractor drivers admitting that in some circumstances the FL will perform better than its bigger, more equipped brethren, wet grass being one, tarmac another.
It is just good sport for the other poor saps to poke fun at our favourite Land Rover
Simple things please simple minds :D:D
 
You're right!! Technically 2 wheel drive cars are really only one wheel drive and 4WD are only 2 wheel drive unless they have diff. locks or limited slip diffs. My old series 3 would not move if I was spinning one front wheel and one rear wheel. The same with my rangerover classic.

That explains why I was thinking the wrong thing..... makes sense when you apply a bit more logic LOL :doh: !!!

Oh and thanks for your valued opinion Chromiumuk.... am gonna have that tattooed on my Arse! :D

Well now, its funny you say that but the wifes car is getting a bit long in the tooth and due to her guiding work she quite likes the idea of a small 4x4 on account she got the Picasso stuck in a field last summer. I was thinking about a Suzuki.... That's done it!! :bolt:

We have a Suzuki Jimny in the family, great little car, very rugged, never any bother. It was my son's first 4x4 but he made the mistake of putting an expensive hi-fi unit in it. It was immediately broken into - no alarm and feeble locking. He passed it to his aunt, she is 82 years old, who loves it. It is poor on bumpy roads, great otherwise.
