slight vibration/rumbling on td5 auto at 2000 revs ish /auto gear changing

Mine does it too. I cleaned the oil out of the RED ECU plug last week using brake cleaner and it seemed to smooth out. However it came back, I checked the ECU again and sure enough there was more oil in the plug. Cleaned it out again and it's remained clean. Trouble is, it still vibrates at around 1800-2200rpm.

This got me thinking....have any of you done the injector harness change??

I've made a small amount of progress.

One independent (non-LR), claimed that he'd come across this before and knew exactly what it was! Proclaimed before he'd even seen it, that it would be handbrake related.

When he saw the car, it was warm, so was doing it less than it otherwise might - but mine still does it in the exact same rev range (1800 - 2300) in every gear. I don't know why its in every gear in the exact same rev range, but it is. It's easy to replicate, and will happily make the same noise whilst sitting stationary in neutral or park on a garage forecourt and revving the throttle.

Anyway - this mechanic said watch this, and revved the engine to the rev range and got to make the rattle. He then held it in the rev range and gently lifted up the hnadbrake - lo and behold, noise disappeared.....

As soon as the handbrake lever went down again, the rattle returned.

He claimed it was the handbrake shoes, and that the solution was to put in a new set of shoes and backing plate on the handbrake assembly. I was sceptical, but it's the closest I've come to a fecking solution so far!

At another garage when the ACE pipes were being done, the counter weights that sit just behind the handbrake assembly were found to be loose. These were tightened up and this seemed to fix it for a short while, but after 15 mins of driving, it was straight back again. Bugger!

Other garage's have just drawn a blank reaction - such as:

  1. Have you checked the downpipe?
  2. ACE pipe rattle?
  3. Exhaust pipe rattle?
blah, blah blah - all of which were checked and claimed as fine.

Any thoughts from anyone on the liklihood of it being the handbrake shoes and backing plate?

Hi,

I've had this for the last year and had almost given up trying to identify the source of the noise. Just put the car through the MOT and it failed on the handbrake and had new shoes fitted. The rattle is still there but sounds "tinnier" than before and completely goes if you hold the handbrake up a little. I therefore believe that the noise just comes from the handbrake assembly somewhere. I have driven another TD5 auto with exactly the same noise.

Did they replace the backing plate as well?
Or the springs?

Or was it just the handbrake pads?.....

I had the strange rumbling noise for ages, was doing my tits in! All the way up the gears at normal driving speed but then dissapeared at top gear, some weeks it would totally disapear then some weeks it would hapen all the time. On the handbrake hub between the 2 prop shafts stick a 17mm socket on the adjuster tighten it up clockwise until it locks, then loosen it 3 x 1/2 turns, not only will this cure the rumbling sound it will also set your handbrake at 3 clicks. This worked for me, my next step will be a full strip down of the drum assembly to see if there is any worn springs shoes etc, but its done the trick for the past 1000 miles, so maybe ill just leave it! The strange rumbling sound cured? maybe.

Problem has now been fixed.

Was finally cured by Gary Bignall from Bigbury 4x4 jst outside Canterbury. In a nutshell - it required no parts, and apparently this was a recall fix from the main dealers when the TD5's were new. He simply removed a part (can't remember what he said it was) from the handbrake assembly and tightened up a few other bits - voila, no more rattle. What an absolute pleasure it is to have no more rattles as we drive the motor.....

Any chance of finding out what part he removed please?

Won't be back there for a while... unless something falls off! Will ask when I'm there next - alternatively, give him a buzz - he's genuine main dealer LR trained mechanic....

From what I understand, it was a significant recall on all TD5's, that was done routinely as part of the service when they came back in. Removed an excess part or something like that - anyone that's been in a MD should know about it.

I had this on a Disco 1, it was the front prop front UJ that was worn and sending the prop out of balance at certain speeds.
