OK...my SJ413 is very poorly. After a day at Brick Kiln, I blew the
clutch and was taken home by the AA on a truck. Note though, that
while waiting for the AA, I was at the side of the road idling for
about an hour, and the zuk ran fine.

Go home, and sat it on my driveway for three weeks before I could get
round to replacing the clutch. Replaced clutch and went to fire her
up...clicky starter...so took off the starter, stripped it and cleaned
a load of mud out...freed up the seized bearing on the bendix....stuck
it back on...span like a beauty, but it wouldn't start.

Took off fuel line at carb, cranked and spurted fuel all over the
engine bay...so fuel pump OK.

Tested each plug for spark...fine. Plugs a bit oily, but the engine
burns alot of oil anyway.

Timing belt is going round and round...took valve cover off and
everything seems to be going up and down as it should (though I'm no
great expert)

Swapped carb with a spare I had knocking around...still nothing....

I'm tearing my hair out here...I've spent most of the weekend working
on the bloody thing and it's still knackered...please help me! I
don't want to give in and take it to the garage!

Cheers

Try a set of new spark plugs. Or borrow some plugs from another vehicle for
purpose of elimination. The plug type won't matter much for a quick test as
long as they are the same reach, i.e the threaded bits are the same length.

Hope this helps,

Where the plugs wet after cranking for a while ?

Have you tried spraying WD40 directly into the carb when cranking ?

I think the "idling at the side of the road for an hour" may be a bit of a
clue. I would also suggest trying a new set of plugs, even if the old ones
look ok.

The only other thing I can think of may be spark timing... I would check the
point gap.

The pluds weren't that wet after about 15-20 secs of cranking...just
covered on oil like they always are ;-)

Yup, tried the WD40 thing...nothing...

I think what's happened is that the timing belt has slipped a couple
of teeth or sheared them off...so no fuel is getting in the
cylinders..

Was going to replace timing belt etc etc, but am picking up a Vit
engine at the weekend...so that's the plan....

So, if anyone needs a 413 engine, I've got 2, including gearboxes, for
around the £150 mark for engine/box. Hants/Wilts/Dorset area...

I might be interested in what you have left, I could do with a 1300 block.

Let me know what bits you got after you've swapped the 1600 in.

Well, at the moment my "spares" stock includes:

complete 413 engine apart from carb & starter
complete 413 engine including carb & starter & all ancilliaries
complete 413 gearbox
413 box with cracked tailshaft
two 413 t-cases
set of 413 springs
413 chassis & body
miscellaneous props etc

tell me what you want and make an offer...I'm trying to clear the garage out...

Not after any specific's at the moment, so let me know what you have left after
a clear out, the only thing Idefinately need is a 413 starter but I assume you
will keep that as you will be knackering them after your 1600 swap ;-)
