I'm thinking of putting SIMEX Extreme Trekkers on my Defender. What is the
optimum size for serious, UK based off-roading..?

What modifications am I likely to need to accommodate the tyres (I've seen
the larger sizes 35x10x16 need suspension lift and maybe body and/or arch
trimming).

cheers

Optimum size!! lovely idea..

Depends where your driving. If its virgin dirt than 31 inch and up..

If you planing on driving on a offroad site where there are ruts then
you "optimum" is slightly larger than the ruts <Chuckle>. I find 33's
are ok for most things although oddly enough if you had 35's then that
would be larger than most tyres and thus you would have an advantage
methinks.

Of course if you drove a vehicle which is either wider or more narrow
than a defender (say a zuki) you'd be laughing on 31's.. <Chuckle>

Oh the joys of ruts..

Simon,

I run 35 10.5 x 16 Centipedes on Wolf rims with HD springs and no lift
and the only mods that I had to do was to "trim" the front and tail of
the wheel arches on the 90 as the return lip on them used to rub on the
tyre and make a hell of a noise!

After the Rainforest challenge I'd not caught any bodywork and I've not
managed any since.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

BTW the 90 is 3.9V8 with LT85 and 1.4 xfer box and 3.5 HD diffs and
shafts. (Detroit in the rear and Tru Trac in the front)

Thanks Bob. I'd also got a message from Simon Buck @ Devon 4x4 saying much
the same thing about the wheel arches, and he also recommended a 2" lift.

Given the cost of the SIMEX, do you think they offer enough performance to
justify their premium price..?

cheers

My local LR place has just fitted 35" Simex with a lift and lockers to a
clients 90 - I'm sure they be happy to tell you what was involved - I know
they had to do some trimming of the arches - (01926) 335630 and ask for
Steve.
