Agreed, its silver on black, at the time a lot were pressed, there were also self adhesive ones (remember how they fell off..). I've still got a few spare of the thick plastic letters, the clips used to rust the letters would fall off. Don't forget quite a few cars had the rear plate inside a glazed box.

Why, surely both were correct for that era just a matter of choice of which supplier / type?
If you had plates made up for a new car then, they would have been plastic letters on a black background. They had already stopped supplying pressed ally ones.
I suppose it’s down to how accurate you want to be.

We will have to agree to disagree. Both were available as a matter of choice to the dealers and they have never stopped supplying pressed ally, they are still available today. There were also other options available to the dealers.

Just ordered some from classicplatesonline courtesey of Fatrover, had looked on ebay and there's only really one outlet cheap but loads of bad feedback, and you have to send your logbook rts

So your saying a dealership in the 1960s would fit the old style plate rather than the new space age plastic bestist plastic modern one.
I doubt it. Simple sales technique to urge buyers to rush out for the latest model.

It is a simple fact that pressed ally plates were considered superior to the newer cheaper plastic riveted letter plates by many. Pressed ally plates in yellow/black & white/black were still being fitted by many dealers long after the advent of the inferior plastic rivited digit plates and the demise of the black and silver plates.

Dealer fitted ally plates were fitted to both my Cortinas similar to this:
