buying advice disco 300TDI ?
Hi

I am looking at buying a disco, I would require the vehicle for work and would also require good reliability. The machine I am looking at is a 300TDI 1996 I think, three door, the mileage on it is 110000, seems alot and the costs of parts worry me, I can have it serviced on the side so no probs with going to landrover for bits.

Any advice and experiences would be good.

I am paul and I am new to this site.

Hi paul, welcome!
I ran a 2.8td isuzu trooper for 3 yrs and loved it, it never missed a beat and was giving me 32 mpg,but rust and the cost of some jap parts, and the availability issue, made me look for another car. Jap imports are way too expensive and have questionable history, and the u.k. cars can cost even more for all the goodies installed. So logically, the next step was landrover, i'd had a series 3 beast years ago, and that was very agricultural...and not too good for the back, so that was a no no, defenders /90's are superb, but still an expensive car. Then i drove a '94 300tdi disco.......i'm still driving it 12 months later, it's great, comfy, reliable, only problem it had was a leaking waterpump gasket, it had full L R service history@94k miles service parts ..filters disc pads etc are very reasonable and there are that many LR franchises up and down the country you will never be short of bits , and with great web sites like this giving years of knowledge and experience to all, you can't go wrong, so, if you do go for a disco just make sure it's got good service history, looking thro' this forum will give you an idea of varying pros and cons of disco ownership, but that applies to all vehicles, good luck!

Hi thanks for that, first question is are you a real boilerman??? Thats what I am domestic and commercial boiler engineer, maybe its just your user name, but any way thought I would ask.

Yeah I have read through the site and there is lots of tips, the thing with owning a disco seems to be a hobby as well as a vehicle to drive.

I have looked at vans and stuff, but with the old Goverment VAT it blows them out of the water, and I aint paying 800 quid in VAT or more when I cant claim it back.

So a disco is looking very good right now, and I have looked into the parts thing, and they seem cheaper then my mondeo. And it would be used purely for work use. I also looked into Jap stuff, but they are way too much for parts, and the disco is a nice looking vehicle. But as you said any older vehicle is going to be a possible problem, its just luck of the draw.

Thanks for that

Paul
