Hi everyone,

I'm a very new Series IIa owner (I've yet to pick it up!), its currently fitted with a
tilt at the moment. I've spotted a safari hardtop for sale near me, is this easy to
fit for winter use?
The wife is now suggesting that I sell the boring family MPV and just use this
as I use a motorbike to go to work and it is only used for family trips at weekends
any one else use anything this old as a daily driver? Is it madness? I'm pretty handy
with the ol' spanner having built a few kit cars and run loads of old minis but nothing
on this scale..

Any advice guys?

Matt

1970 Series IIa 88" - soon!

If you don't like the tilt I have a hardtop you could swap it for! Seriously though I'd keep the tilt on all year round - hardtops take up a lot of room when they're stored after all.

You might want to consider an overdrive for everyday use, unless you're happy with a noisy 55mph maximum, but other than that it should be fine. I ran an 1961 Austin A35 van as my everyday car for three years not so long ago - older cars are generally fine in regular use, it's when they sit for long periods that you have trouble.

The chap selling the hardtop would like to swop as well, but theres no chance I'm afraid.
If I have to choose one then hats and gloves in the winter it is! ;) I just think the hard top
might make it a little more acceptable to the little ones in the back in winter.

Storing it will be a pain, it just depends how hard it is to swop...

I think you'll find a hardtop is no colder or warmer than a tilt. Just noisier when it rains.
And when (if) the sun shines you can't easily whip it off and go for a spin - soft tops rule!
