I know I have asked this before on anuvva fred - but no joy - so here goes agin.

Now I have fitted 760 tyres on the Dibnah - the blinkin tyres rub on the chassis. I keep seeing posts about adjusting the steering stops - but cant find a damn thing around the steering that looks like an adjuster to limit the steering lock.

can anyone with more knowledge on these things PLEASE tell me wot I need to do before Sunday.

they are on the front of the swivel, at the 3 o'clock pos as seen front the underneath of the landy... one of the securing bolts will be longer and that contacts a small plate on the axle. this plate wears so yer steering can turn more which then knackers yer steering box. the head of the adjusting screw should be 1/2" out from swivel.

Am I blind? I cant see anything that looks like a stop.

here are some pics taken of the front steering (Yeah - I know my ball is corroded!)

where ARE the steering stops?

I think I know wot yu mean - I aint got any longer bolts there. - might need to go buy some with a lock nut to fix it in place.

having had a closer look whilst it was on the ramps - I think #i might have found where they should be. On the attached piccy - the lh ringed item is, i think, the bump stop, and the rh ringed bolt head, although difficult to see, because of all the crud, shd be a longer bolt with lock nut, to adjust the maximum turning angle of the ball.

Am I on the right track here?

whilst i think of it - the ball is obviously corroded - is it bad enough to replace or is it ok for a while? I have no standard (apart from an uncorroded one on the other side) to base any judgement on.

On closer inspection - they arent bolts!!!! - they are nuts with sheared off bolts going through them!!!:eek::eek: although now, one of them isnt even a nut cos I tried undoing it - and I now have a sheared section of bolt left in the swivel housing!!!!ffs!

another jobby - drill it out, retap it and fit the CORRECT steering stop bolts and locknuts.

1 step forward (Steering ball joints and alignment done today):D - one step back!

would some kind soul let me know what thread these bastard things are meant to be, please.

naw - cant do that the angle of dangle is all wrong - cos its the swivel that moves. The best bodge I can come up with at the mo is not to try and use full lock - and if I feel the tyres rubbing - back orf a bit ;) .
I will get it fixed - just not by tomoz :( - having sed that - its no worse than it has been all along - just notice it more with the 760 tyres.
 
aye its a common problem, the bolts are 1/4 UNF and just int meaty enought to take the abuse of bangin up against the stop. mine have now got 6mm bolts in them .. and if yer swivels have got oil in them and int leakin ah wint bother about changing them.
 
aye ah seen yer pîccy after i posted but ah couldn't be arsed to go and change it, instead i thought if any one notices i'll just pretend it was sed for the benefit of those other readers wot got pitted balls wiff no leaks
 
hi daft i knew yours was leaking but i thought that maybe some others might benefit from the knowledge that you can still run them so long as they dint leak
 
either that or rig up a 50 galleon drum on yer roof with pipes feeding into each swivel. and you might like to consider an oil catcher set up so you can recuperate some of the otherwise lost oil or perhaps an air driven oil distributor that could be used in conjungtion with the leaky swviels to rust proof yer chassis
