Series 3 fuel economy

I just use my 2.25 petrol S3 for pottering at the weekend so I don't really mind the 12-15 mpg. I'm interested in the fuel economy a diesel with overdrive would get.

Does anyone have one as a full time daily drive? I'd be interested to know. Thanks...

I did have a 2.25 diesel with rangy diff's and over drive . 30 mpg all day every day . on the motorway , foot down , scarry as hell . off the clock and not a brake to speak of , drum's it seem's don't like 90 ish mph !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

200tdi makes them fairly fuel efficient! Afraid i don't have a speedo so can't calculate mpg, but, compared to the old 2.25 petrol it's at least 3 times better on effiency

200Di, overdrive, approx 32mpg

I've got a Series 2a 2.25 petrol with Fairey overdrive, its my daily drive and under normal conditions I get 24-26 mpg, having said that, I recently did a 320 mile round trip to Suffolk and back and averaged 33mpg

I must add that my father and I decoked it before the long trip, but half a days work and £25 spent on gaskets is worth the increase in fuel economy if you use your Landy like I do.

I think a long weekend offroading in the peaks i got between 30-35mpg avearge for the whole trip, that was a mix of motroway, a roads, country lanes and off road playing. I was pretty chuffed with that. That was a 200tdi, Overdrve and standard diffs.

sure you worked that mpg out right?? never heard of a petrol 2.25 engine doing that amount of mpg. my swb series 2.25 petrol had a rebuilt engine weber carb, free wheeling hubs, electric fan, and still at best did 22mpg, got shut of the petrol engine and put a 200di in getting 35mpg much better

Yeah I did wonder, but my dad checked it too. I must add I have a Zenith carb and 7.50 R16 Lorry tires on the back, which make a very noticable difference.

If you work on petrol never breaking 17/20 mpg and 27/30 for the diesel at best you wont go far wrong.
Diesel is pretty slow, 200tdi makes them a whole lot better, not fast just effortless.
Slow work is where the diesel wins around town and off roading, the petrol will just gulp down, whlist the diesel will sip away.

Yes the speedo is fine, and doesn't fluctuate much at all which is always a bonus.

I've just replaced my ugly 205/16 mud terrain tyres with Avon Rangemaster 750/16s. Will this make any difference to the fuel economy?

The speedo's hilarious anyway. The needle dances away merrily between 40 and 50, but you're right about the look as in the thumbnail below.

that's good enough for a series.
a clock in a series wouldn't need the long hand, and even the short one could be wrong two hours and you wouldnt notice

To be honest, that's part of the joy. I just potter along and let everyone speed past me. It reminds me that I'm not part of that race until Monday morning again. 40mph at the weekend suits me fine!

to answere the op question. i have a 2.25 diesel with standard everything, no od and get about 26 mpg. i reckon this could be considdered the minimum you will get because my engine is f***ed and keeps running on its own engine oil, with lots of blue smoke.

its slow, smelly and gutless (before it was brocken even). i potter about at between 35/45mph in hilly north wales. i am replacing my knackered 2.25 with another one the same as dont mind going slow and like the idea of keeping it origional.

Sorry i meant checked against a gps or sat nav etc.
My 90 one reads under by about 8 percent
The s2 one is miles out 25 is 30, 40 is 50 ish, 50 is about 65 sort of.
