Hi, I'm new to this and looking for a little guidance please.
I have a 1977 Series 3 swb with what I think is a Rover front diff, but it looks different to the one in the Haynes. It leaks where the prop shaft connects.
It's apart and down to the 4 splined shaft, behind which there is a seal marked "217507 retainers" which looks like a steel one with leather inside. Before I make a mess of it, is it supposed to come out forwards? Or do you have to take the working of the diff apart? What's the best way to remove it?
Thanks in anticipation
Richard

It did eventually thanks, the one that came out was steel with leather or similar in the middle, it was completely destroyed, but, it all went back together with the rubber/plastic one

where the diff spline is the seal is held in a housing all you would have needed to do is remove the 6 studs from around it and remove it and tap it out.

That's what the Haynes shows, but mine doesn't have that bit on it which confused me
ok yeah i know what you mean, i did a google search this morning and saw that some landrover did not have that, i wonder if they are a different type of diff then, like maybe a discovery or something else.

i must have the early type then, actually to mention it i dont really know what year my landrover was made, im assuming it was around 1963, it was built from a CKD kit in south australia because about 8 years ago i sanded the drivers side front mudguard where the side light and indicator is and down the bottom there was landrover spray painted from a stencil on the guard, and that is what they did on australian assembled landrovers i had found out.

would there be anywhere i could check the date of manufacture.

Tony.
