Series 3 109 Six Pot Rebuild Thread

Cleaned, rebuilt, painted and assembled the two propshafts over the last few days, the first work on the project for a long time. Just got to tighten up the 16 fixing bolts and fit the sliding joint grease nipples and thats another job ticked off the list and the parts cleared off the bench where they have been sitting for around 6 months since I took the apart!

Don't know, prices vary. However this is not the problem as at even the highest end of the price range it is getting it up here that costs.
At the moment I am a long way away from needing one but if one came up I would grab it. I cannot get the Series out of the workshop door with the roof on anyway so it cannot be fitted until the very last minute of the build. :p
I want one simply because I have been fitting just about every period upgrade I can find when doing the build, plus it means I would have a full length headlining (no more rain inside) a bit of sound deadening and I can more easily leave the dog inside when hot or cold outside.

Yep the safari roof with the vents kept open and the front vents too, does feel much cooler for the dogs indeed.

Well, after a long break where I was busy elsewhere (thats my story and I will stick to it) I decided to start on the engine this week.
Started pulling bits out to start cleaning, repairing and painting so as to get the machine work done.
removed the pistons and while I am going to rebore and put in new pistons (I have already bought the bits £££) I fond the original ones were actually in pretty good nick, along with the bores. The only damage seems to be on the one that was seized and it only had broken piston rings.

Anyway cleaned the rods, pressed out the little ends and pressed in new ones.

Not happy with No5 rod, the pin is a bit loose in it even before reaming, funnily enough this rod was loose before I took out the pin and was the seized piston, wonder if they are connected. Anyway I'll get another bush and try this one again before panicking about having to get another rod!

Nice new pistons, cost enough though and I found when opening the box that one box had the circlips missing, bugger!

The block needs a good clean out to get rid of the internal rust before I get it rebored, thats not going to be a very nice job!

Got the rear brake plate s blasted and painted so shortly put them on and turn the chassis around to finish off the front. Its a bugger finding all the bits secreted all over the workshop over the past few years, especially as there are three bikes in this shed alone all awaiting assembly or in partial bits awaiting repairs. I would sell a couple of projects to reduce the number but the last time I did that I just bought another to replace it that didn't actually go, not a good comparison to the one I sold which was a good runner.
Anyway, Bulkhead lowering kit arrived today and a got a new floor for the rear tub yesterday so more bits arriving to crack on. Will see if I can get the short block built now and finish off the four hubs to get it on its wheels. before starting on the tub. I need to wait till the summer anyway for the tub to get warmer weather!

Started cleaning out the corrosion in the water jacket tonight, what a horrible messy job!
Once I have cleaned up the block inside and out I can get it in for a rebore and start assembling some of it, however its going to take a while based on progress tonight, got about 80% of it out but still need to get into some of the recessed bits.

Cleaned up the valve seats with a brass brush, found 4 good un's, one that is probably recoverable and one badly burnt
one that will need to be replaced. I have knocked out the valve guides as I have new ones of them and intended to replace them all anyway but had hoped the seats were OK .
