Hi my diesel landy smokes like a trooper & ive read a few posts on hear about simply twisting the diesel pump , do i do this with the engine running or not ? as you can proberly tell im no mechanic but it looks simple enough, many thanks

you can twist it a little with engine running but to do more you need to slacken injector pipes you cant do that with engine running, check pump marks or make soime before adjusting , over the years the cam chain wears as does skew gear etc so retarding pump , adjusting pump can help but isnt total answer as cam is still retarded

As James say's it can help but best bite the bullet one day and change the timing chain. Only then can you begin to set it up correctly.

Well ive loosened the 3 bolts that hold the pump on & slackened the injectors off but the pump wont budge ! is there anything ive missed or does it need a tap with a hammer ??

Have you tried to put the timing pins in the holes first, check the existing adjustment?
And if you are trying trial and error, make sure you clearly mark the pump flange before you move the pump, or you will have no idea where you were to begin with.
Loosen the three bolts a fraction more, tap it gently with a hammer and piece of wood if it wont turn by hand.

Success ! followed all your advice & managed to turn the pump slightly, tightened everything up, started it & alot less smoke :) result & many thanks again for everyones tips & help
