Carb was fitted back on and still no luck so will look at condenser etc this week. It is still popping and spluttering but just not running . Thanks.

If i recall correctly, with a standard distributor, #1 on the cap points more or less at #1 cylinder, then it's 1342 anti clockwise
Turn it over by hand until you feel compression on #1, as you get to the TDC mark, worth double checking is #1 piston. Take the plug out and carefully probe a suitable implement down the plug hole to confirm the piston is at the top. Be gentle, not ham fisted and don't drop whatever you use into the cylinder!!

When piston #1 is at TDC, should the rotor be pointing to ht lead for #1 ? Currently it's pointing towards 3 and 4s direction.
Yes, when#1 piston is at TDC the rotor arm should be pointing at #1 cylinder lead. Try moving the lead for #1 cylinder to where the rotor arm is pointing , then (anticlockwise) put #3, #4 then #2. making a note (photo) of where everything is before you move anything, that way if it doesn't work you can put it back where you found it.

Thanks again for the advice. I will try changing the leads around later and if nothing then I will ensure they go back to original positions. Thanks
For the manual link, il download that and get reading.

Tried the leads around and sounded worse. So I have put them back as was previously and will get a new condenser tomorrow and hopefully that will work...

The piston is at TDC twice in the cycle take rocker cover off and watch for cylinder 1 inlet valve opening then closing at thispoint piston will be approaching TDC for firing stroke and rotor should be pointing to cylinder 1 lead.
Is there a timing mark on the flywheel pulley later engines had them at that point if not it is under cover on rear bell housing driver side top.

Thanks for that, still new to all this and I knew but hadn't thought at the time about the TDC being twice. Getting a new condenser today so will see if that gets it going.

Well tried new condenser this evening and still no luck, still getting spark and going to change ht leads tomorrow as they are looking past there best anyway. Static timing wise it all looks right. As others had mentioned it should run (although roughly) with static timing being good enough to get it to run . Any other ideas? Thanks for your help

I don't have a compression tester but it does sound even enough. When I pump accelerator it coughs and bangs louder, as if it's more likely to start than if I don't press accelerator when cracking over if that makes any sense?

Ok how old is the petrol?
Have you tried without the air intake connected to the top of the carb?
I'm running out of options, still sounds to me like a timing problem

Is there an in line fuel filter? Is it clean? or Blocked? Does the fuel pump, pump enough/any fuel to the carb? Does it have a glass sedimentor near the fuel pump? Is it clean or full of sh!te?
