Series 2 disco with transmission temp problem

Be careful taking the temp sensor out of the oil cooler. It is screwed in to a Rivnut - basically an uber pop rivet tapped with a thread. What can happen (it did to me) is the thread on the sensor is tighter than the rivnut's grip on the cooler. Result is knackered cooler!
Certainly the sensors are iffy (my Disco is on it's third and that's just failed) as with the later level series 2 Discos they did the typical Land Rover fix and deleted it. Basically seems if the warning light comes on, check the fluid level (as per good instructions below) and if all OK disconnect the sensor!

Just thought I'd add a note. I ran a similar thread year or so ago and everyone pointed to the cooler being a little small for the work I was doing or the fluid needing changing - anyway, my gearbox failed and the reason was that the transfer box was almost out of oil and was transferring heat through to the gearbox and it blew up - in Switzerland!!!

Might be worth a consideration. Car now recovered, running fine and is back in Switzerland with a new gearbox and transfer box. Won't make that mistake again!!
