Series 2 cutting out at junctions and around left hand corners

Hello,

I'm currently having problems with the 2.25 petrol (Zenith 361V / top mounted air filter) in my Series 2 cutting out/spluttering when I've been driving along and then come to a road junction (more problematic when coming downhill) or going around left-hand corners which go uphill.

The rest of the time other than a little problem starting from warm the Series 2 goes along well no spluttering at all and starts well from cold.

Anybody have any ideas?

Check your fuel delivery first, is the petrol getting to the carb? Is the in line fuel filter blocked? Is the 'sock' on the fuel pick up pipe covered in crud? Have you ran out of fuel recently or ran very low? This could have dragged up all sorts of sediment into your fuel system. Is you fuel pipe from the pump to the carb routed correctly, if it goes past anything very hot it could be vaporising the fuel. If fuel is getting to the carb check the inlet valve works correctly and the float is free to move ( and not holed and thereby not floating). After that check your jets aren't blocked. There's not a great deal to a series fuel system. Check - don't guess.

OK after my first diagnosis which is "don't turn left" (I asked Tommy Cooper) my thoughts are: 1 is it related to the tank vs carb level - can the pump pick up OK? or 2 is it a side to side issue - is the float bowl level OK? I lkie the suggestion above re vaporisation,; think laterally. A freinds Mini (proper Mini) used to missfire on acceleration, he had tried everything, The HT lead was tiewrapped to the grill, under acceleration the engine moved and pulled the lead out just a bit. You never know.

All of the above and sometimes a bit of crud in the slow running jet will do this. An old trick to clear is to remove air filter, rev the motor up a bit at the carb then slap your hand over the inlet. Extra suction clears any crap. Remove hand before engine stops and do it a couple more times.

Many thanks all for your comments. I've cleaned the fuel pump glass bowl out as there was a lot of crud in it and also checked the pick up pipe and noticed it's missing it's mesh filter so I've ordered another one. I also need to see if I can get a mesh filter for the fuel bowl as this seems to be missing. I've also filled the fuel tank up and all is a lot better than before. Next step when fuel runs down again is to empty the tank and get all the remaining crud out of the tank. A job for another day.

The glass bowl doesn't have a filter in it. What you need a simple 'in line' filter £4 off fleabay. Something like this:

Get a clear one so you can see if it gets bunged up.

As wireman says, get an inline fuel filter before doing anything. If your tank has crud in it, fitting a mesh to the pick up pipe will cause the mesh to block, you need to clean the tank before fitting a mesh. I have some crud in my second tank under the driver seat and if I switch to that tank the filter blocks in a few days. For the price of in line filters, you could fit two.

Check the tank pickup pipe for cracks as it sounds like it is sucking air below a certain level, they are known to crack.

Thanks to all for your comments, I've cleared out the carb bowl and ordered an inline filter.

I had also ordered a new pick-up pipe from John Craddock's but it turns out it's too long to fit in the tank, will need some investigation and as advised will only fit when I've cleared the tank out of any other crud!

My new elbow (pickup) pipe was a very "neat" fit in my new tank, so much so without the cork gasket in place it wouldn't fit.. ;)

You've had lots of good suggestions about turning left (other than don't turn left then! :D) and I doubt this is your problem but I read it tonight and it made me chuckle and think of this thread.. :D

I had very similar issues with my Lightweight after I bought it. There’s nothing worse than not having confidence in your landy when you drive it!

I’ve now got a system which I pretty much do on any petrol landy I buy....

  1. Strip and clean carb, or replace with a zenith copy £40.
  2. Strip and clean lift pump, or replace for £20
  3. Drop and replace fuel tank £100 ish for clean one!
  4. Put an inline filter before carb. £5

Might sound like overkill to some but for £165 you will hopefully have it running sweet and you’ll save weekends of ****ing about ;)
