Series 1s at Mount Everest

My friends doing the Mount Everest Marathon at the moment and sent me a pic. He said they're using landies for the marshals. They all look like series 1s

Wow that is cool, and a Series 1 too. Thanks for sharing!

I need to ask my Sherpa friend how those got there, as there's no road to Lukla and I don't think they could get there by air either as the Lukla airport is too small to accommodate anything other than short take off and landing aircraft.

Here in Nepal and India it's pretty normal to see Series Land Rovers with all of their paint stripped and just the polished aluminum... seems to be their preference over paint.

The usual method is:

1. Strip Land Rover into pack animal sized bits
2. Porter to where you want them
3. Rebuild!
A series 1 chassis is lighter than you'd think. Even a series III chassis is manageable by two people.
 
Wow, that is likely spot on. A CKD Series One in the Khumbu. Too cool.

That's actually the way they got the original cars into Kathmandu... on foot.

Bushwwacker the 110's a 1983 ... Never checked how early off the production line it is though. I've made the change from a Series to the 110 but I didn't want to go too far from series roots. Still got my lift up handles and sliding windows :D

Add a satin clear coat then. I dunno I think bare aluminum might be best left for the Delorean.

'Tis a smart looking landy :)
I'd have a look at the VIN number and try to find out the age if it were mine and appn count a few rivets... ;)
 
Many years ago I stripped the paint of my 1954 86" and left it like that all winter no adverse effects to alloy.
When you think about it the underside of the body work on all series left the factory as bare alloy many places under my 1972 series 3 are still bare and have been exposed to a fair bit of salt over the years .
 
I'm headed up to Everest base camp starting Monday, going to drive the 110 as close as I can (which is quite far away still, Phaplu). I'll keep an eye out for those Series 1s and will get some pics and maybe a vin. Where would the vin be on one of those??
