Self locking?

Hi peeps, haven't been on for a while as everythings been working ok!!

So, a few days ago whilst driving, 'click' the central locking kicked-in,
all locked, I assumed i'd somehow 'elbowed' it & locked it, so I unlocked
by lifting the push-button, all seemed ok, then, 5mins later, it clicked &
locked everything once again.
Now it seems that every time I go out, it will go through these phases of
self-locking, & seems to be 'random' periods of operating.

The car locks & unlocks perfectly via the buttons, it has a 1000 CCAH battery
which is less than a year old & always starts instantly (1996 2.5 DSE)

All electrics works as they should, & the car is in very good condition otherwise, & there's no dash messages.

I mentioned this a while back, as mine does it very infrequently, and I was advised to check the linkages in the driver's door. I must admit that I haven't yet.

I reckon there are a lot of possible causes, front passenger door also locks/unlocks all doors for example.

Sooooooo that's an excuse??

Why not come on here when your Rangie is working fine and imparting your knowledge to others about issues they may have that you could help with....if we all only came on here when we had problems to look for answers and not give feedback or assistance to others...there would just be a long list of questions and no answers.....:eek:

Whats with the sarcasm, when I joined this forum (a few years before you I might add ) it was friendly & helpful, I don't think this forum benefits from know-it-alls, I had a respectful request & therefore expected a likewise reply,
I even said 'thanks' at the end, obviously waisted on you.

PS if you bothered to research, you'll see I HAVE answered with help to others in the past.

No need to rise to the bait wasn't trying to be sarcastic saint has and does give lot of good advice and has to my requests for help in the past and i take his point about not just picking other peoples brains hence why i had mentioned what i had tried to resolve the issue. In mentioning the drivers door mech it was more to see if someone else also thought this might help maybe think i just got the wording wrong.
My response to saint was in jest not meant as sarcasm. I think the forum is great and the people on here really good and informative and has and hopefully will remain great help to myself and others in the future.

No sarcasm, just a comment on your post which exclaims that your Range Rover has been working well so you haven't been on the forum for a while...a working reliable Rangie is great don't get me wrong.....I merely pointed out that it would be nice for you to pop in even if your Rangie is in fine fettle to help others not so fortunate, rather than only turning up when you have an issue!

You have posted to others queries....great! keep it up, with these beasts of burden there is strength in numbers to help others out.

If you would like to talk statistics, you joined in 2005 and myself in 2008, you have posted 185 odd times (to date) whilst I have contributed 5100 odd posts (some of which have been total nonsense, and mostly bout Wammers dogging activities :p).

I do not mean disrespect, I am not that kind of person....just pointing out, by your own admission, you only pop on the forum when you have an issue, that is all....

PS: I noticed the thanks....so has not been wasted on me at all.

Back to "automatic locking"

Firstly I can't help chuckling to myself that, less than a week ago, I was posting on a thread to an L332 owner who wanted this to happen.

Secondly I've got it stuck in my head that this must be something to do with the driver's door mechanism. Purely because it's the most used part of the system. One day, when the weather is warmer and I'm not repairing some other part, or polishing the beast, or customising some part of it, or upgrading the sound system, or cleaning the leather I might investigate this theory of mine.
 
Well I hooked it up to the Rovacom & it came up all clear with no faults in the memory, so it strikes me that it may be an indicator of a possible 'degrading' problem, something like a slightly corroding connection somewhere thereby 'triggering' or 'spiking' the very sensitive ecu monitoring.
Datatek, it reminds me that a month or so back, during the heavy frost, the tailgate button was totally dead, nothing all day, but the next day & ever since, its been fine, so there might be a connection??
 
:eek:Sorry saint probably because when i reread my post I did feel bit guilty as it appeared by the way i worded it I was just waiting for one of you guys to come up with the answer which wasn't the case. so as i said i took your point. I put the comment on purely meant as comical reply which i think is how you took it, :eek::eek::D With regard the issue of the central loccking must admit I am totally confused by it, on my old p38 which i did report on an earlier thread I ended up replacing both front door mechs, and the drivers door lock which also meant new key fob as well all this after replacing the r/f unit. but in the end this resolved all my central locking issues. So I've had in my head that replacing the door mech might solve this issue it seems dogsbody seems to have the same idea, but i must admit the cost of sorting the other one out puts me of in case i'm opening a new can of worms.:confused::confused: as it seems by this thread that i will need to replace the passenger side as well. I'd appreciate your comments before i bit e the bullet and give it a try.
 
The trouble with the P38 is the central locking system and the way it works is ridiculously over complex....add into the mix the BeCM and an RF Reciever that loses its head as soon as you fit a wireless doorbell..!!!

As Datatek has said, issues with the tailgate lock seem to cause issues and havoc with the door locks and is worth ensuring the wiring thereto is sound the the switch body itself is functioning and not full of water, as can happen!

Take a goosey at the tailgate lock and also ensure the security of the wiring to both the doors too....

After it froze up a couple of winters ago I did a complete rebuild of the tailgate locking, electrics and mechanically. My beloved (!!!) car still flips it's locks now and then, hence my thinking is towards the driver's door.
Maybe one of these days I'll actually have a look.
 
Well i'm going to have another really good look at the tailgate mechanism as sugested and see how that goes, Its now touch wood the only problem i have with the car but is just a bit annoying and really would like to sort it, and also bit worried that maybe in time could cause problem with the locks,especially if it gets worse.

Start with the button itself. There should be a rubber flange to stop water getting in. They perish but are available on fleabay for a couple of quid. Then the interior spring. I couldn't find the spring alone, only the entire button assembly. I replaced mine with a custom built item. It was a bit of old wire coat hanger. Then I packed it all with grease. I think I meant it as a temporary measure - two or three years ago!
