Series 3 selector shaft O-ring oil leak and a nasty surprise!

The oil on transfer case side is much lower than the oil seal so only splash oil on that side the bearing being lubricated by gearbox oil.
There was a lad awhile back bought a sealed for life bearing for that location and removed the seal from gearbox side to help restrict oil pathway to transfer case side.
 
transfer box side has a oil thrower keeping the oil away from seal and bearing,there isnt on the gear box side as oils needed to lube the bearing
 
As we’re talking transfer boxes, I currently have my engine and gearbox out and separated. I have a lot more wear/backlash on the front output shaft than the rear. Obviously it makes sense to do this now whilst I have it out of the vehicle. Can anyone tell me what the likely culprits are and what’s best to replace whilst I have easy access. Thanks!!
 
how are you checking front output shaft, if it has up/down side to side play then it would need front bearing,it has rotational play by design

thats normal the idea been 4wd drive can be selected on the move but no wheels spinning,so dog clutch has alot of play, if selected and just spins freely if not selected
