Saying hi from a new member

Don't be too put off by reading threads on here as people usually only post their problems and not the periods of trouble free motoring.
My 2000 DHSE has been running fine (touch wood) for a couple of years, I had to spend a bit on it to begin with because I didn't know enough about them when I bought it but other than general maintenance it's been fine. I've now got to sort out a window acctuator and possibly a new starter motor in the near future but I'd probably have to do that with any 11 year old car with 160k onthe clock.
I'd definitely go for one, spend a lot of time finding the right one and don't rush into it, there are loads of examples out there and many have been cherished by LR fans.

Depends what might be wrong with it.

If you do it yourself and just buy parts it's not too bad

Replacing the airbags is probably about £260.
A set of O-rings to refurb the valve block about £25, a new diapragm was £13 and a new pump arm was about £75.

Hi Dr W, I think you must be some sort of mind reader;), Here I am drinking a cuppa and thinking to myself "There seems to be a lot of scary reading on here BUT, "hold on a mo" there must surely be many happy P38 enthusiasts amongst this site, and hey presto you come along. Thanks :p:p:p

They are not so bad, I've done 20K in mine before I hit a real problem. Airbags are an easy DIY job I can send you a guide, around £240 for OEM or £289 for Arnott Gen2's. I just bought an "O" ring set for £10.50 OEM off Ebay to refurb a spare valve block before I need it. Height sensors are pricey at £65 but can be found cheaper from time to time.
Electrical faults seem to be the main other area of problems and they do like regular oil changes for all parts.

Get a well looked after one, take care of it and unless you are very unlucky it will serve you well. I have 2 mates with year 2000 P38 and one with an L322 all trouble free:D

I can get by but usually need to pick someone's brains first.. I did rebuild a starter motor for my boat recently which was easier than I thought it would be. (£10 repair or £300 to replace) easy decision for me, being tighter than a ducks a*se :D:D:D

I deffo ain't loaded but don't mind spending out if needs must.. My mechanical upbringing was always "let it develop" and that just won't do in this day and age, so prevention has now become priority! Especially being a boat owner as them damn AA people won't come out to sea:p

I am getting the drift but will probably **** all and sundry off with questions until I get to where I want to be:)

I am a fairly new owner - bought a 2001 Diesel and must say very happy. I'm fairly handy with spanners and did check about, you definately see some dogs - but the one I bought is clean, straight, 12 month MOT, everything works as it should bar one window switch. 94k miles - so I am about to set about changing all oils and filters, and airbags looking at them - but thats peace of mind servicing as I also have a wodge of receipts for services at LR dealers and elsewhere, new rad, new centre box - what I am saying is someone else has spent money looking after it, so imho a good one to go for.
Datatek - I'll pm you as I would like a replacing the airbags guide :)

Change to the RAC, they helped out when I was on holiday on a canal boat and broke down:D
