I have recently purchased a 2004 Range Rover l322 vogue 3.0 td. The monitor unit / head set unit is back lit but does not display anything. I have been through all the previous threads and tried the helpful suggestions. I have disconnected every unit in the system one by one to establish if any one unit was giving me grief, all to no avail. There is no damp issues with this vehicle and all plugs and connectors are clean. I have purchased a second-hand head unit and I still have the same issue. I have also removed fuse 49 for 10 minutes. The other issue I have discovered is that the radio plays fine ( though I cannot determin what channel I am on) and I can scan up and down using the steering wheel controls. However it will only play for about 10 minutes. If I switch the radio off and on again it comes back on for a further five - 10 minutes etc. I don’t believe these two issue are related but I am suspecting the power amplifier - any suggestions will be greatly received

The usual problem is the kit in the N/S rear quarter is, or has been wet at some time. Unplugging individual units is not helpful as they run on a common data bus system I believe. Also if the battery has been disconnected at any point without waiting for the LED to go out on the SatNav CD unit, the CD unit will be toast.

You state: "The monitor unit / head set unit is back lit but does not display anything." I would take this as you have a signal issue going into the unit. You need to check all your connections with an emphasis on the known trouble spots - water intrusion in the rear. You state you did this - did you find anything hinting at water problems? Is the light on your rear nav unit stuck on?

Hi Kg74, there is no hint of water ingress any where on the vehicle the light on the nav unit does stay on for a long time after pressing the eject button but eventually goes out - as I don't have a disc I have just assumed that the unit was hunting for the disc. I have tried the system with the unit removed and get the same results

My recollection is that if the sat nav cd does not turn off that could be the source of your problem. Theory being - The light is remaining on because the unit is still trying to read data, which it cannot for some reason. Therefore the unit is sending a signal which contains no displayable information. Generally it is the laser within the unit that is either dirty or aged.

It has been sometime since I troubleshooted and/or researched the issue. Couple of questions.

Q1) Have you tried pulling the fuse on the sat nav cd? I am speaking of the actual fuse on the unit, not one located in a general fuse panel. If I recall there is a fuse on the unit - you may have to remove the unit and disconnect the main wire harness to access it as it is located there.

If I recall the system, the harness needs to remain connected so that the wiring chain is not broken.

Q2) Which unit do you have CD based (Mk3) or DVD based (Mk4)?

I will do some additional research and update.

I looked up some used part pictures on Ebay and do not see a fuse on the unit itself. So I am thinking of another car, or the harness could contain the fuse. So this could be a dead end. You should be able to disconnect the harness and examine to determine.

Thank you sooo much the first link in the bimmerboard link you sent me clarified everything. The radio working intermittently and the head unit not working is a common BMW fault. Mine is the cd mk3 type and as you rightly remembered there is no unit fuse. So I cannot verify the fault by removing it. And removing the unit sounds like it that causes more problems as it is the core to coms with other unit around the vehicle. I feel confident that it is the cd unit and will order a replacement- my gratitude to you for taking the time to point me in the direction

Before ordering a MK3 unit, check out replacing it with a MK4. Plenty of info on the subject. It is a straight swap that needs a software update and new DVD disks - rest is plug and play. Better, faster and stronger. You can source from BMWs (firmware on the web to change the flash screen to RR). I did that on my 2004.

Thanks to all those who helped here. I finally got to the problem and there were three issues which without outside help I would not have got to. The sat nav unit definitely was not the problem. The problem was in the blue plug on the TV unit and the tv unit itself. ( just for those who don't know tv unit feeds the live ground and data to the satnav unit so you cannot simply take it out) I bought a sat nav unit with diagnostic from navtvman on eBay. Next thing is I get a message to call Andy (navtvman). He asked me a few question about how the satnav unit was reacting i.e. was the light staying on. Which it was. He then asked me to to take out the sat nav unit and to remove the bottom cover and to send him a photo. From this he determined that it had not suffered water damage. He determined that it was very unlikely that the unit was toast, merely hunting for a data bus signal. Next he asked me to take the blue plug out of the tv unit and plug it directly into sat nav unit. The Head unit sprung into life. However only for a short time. He explained that in his 18 years of experience of working on these vehicle there was a likely cause and the it would be one of three pins in the tv unit blue plug. Pin 1- live (green red) pin 3 - data (white Purple) pin 10 - ground (brown). Both 1 and 3 needed changing - I was fortunate in the I had an old plug with the same coloured wires which I cannibalised, so simply cut off six inches of the old leads and replaced the cable complete with new contact. If you are having problems this man will sort you out very quickly - what is more he will supply guaranteed refurbed unit (or refurb you one). His email address is [email protected]. there is nothing this man does not know about the electronic system on range rover or BMW. In fact he used to work for Land rover. He will not sell you something you don't need. If you contact him please use my name Tony Pybus - I get 20 gbp for a referral. He also is able to help with upgrades - getting your phone to operate on blue tooth both for streaming music and taking calls. Thank you KG74 for your suggestion of an upgrade and pointing me in the right direction. Happy Motoring

Due to water like or just age? Mine all look mint but not checked for voltage on those pins for tv module yet as didn’t realise it was the host module! Weird thing with mine is it all works perfect with key in pos 2 but soon as start the engine audio cuts out and DSP goes blank! Have messaged that guy n mentioned yr name from this post ;) don’t suppose u got a number for him have you?

Cheers mate, yea will do!! What was supposed to happen if everything was ok and ya plugged that blue lead right into nav?

My pleasure. You are just eliminating the tv unit from the fault finding which is a common fault and is used to route all the data. If everything works you know the tv unit is the problem - if not then the problem exists elsewhere. Good luck - Andy will steer you right
