Salt water corroded chassis, Whats the best treatment?

My disco had been used for backing a boat into the water, Instead of winching it down the have been reversing the disco right in so this is why my eas compressor was siezed and why my chassis is rusted on the surface (along with almost everything else, luckily the chassis is still solid but i want to treat it now before it gets any worse, after scraping what i can get off what would be the best paint or treatment for the chassis to prevent further rot, somebody told me paint it with a thick engine oil but there must be a better way, like hammerite direct to rust stuff, Any ideas will be much gracias. Thanks.

You need to make sure it is all off the corrison that is, sand balst it and then hammerrite it up.
 
spray with old engine oil, leave for a few week and under seal

If you want to treat it use Dinitrol RC800/RC900.
 
the salt will just keep coming back no matter what you put on it, don't forget it will rot from the inside aswell.

****, i never thought about that, I only intend on keeping it for a couple of months, I dont have access to any sandblast or spraying equipment and i refues to pay for work on a car as i do everything myself. I'll treat the outside best i can What a **** up. Thanks people.

No, Lancashire, I'll give it some direct to rust hammerite and run it for a while and get shut. ****ing shame cos its a nice car aswell.. I have been tapping the chassis rails at the rear with a screwdriver, Still sounds strong but there a few areas where it sounds very thin,
 
If you ask me the only hope is to have it professionally waxoyld they will wash and steam clean and pore wax into the chassis members cost about £450.00 but if it were me I would very wary of salt water it is vicious stuff !!
 
Insurance company's write cars off if they have been in salt water. It's not only the chassis and body you need to worry about the axle's are made of steel brake calippers and pipes, and you won't get rid of the salt it would have got into evey little gap and salt attracts moister. Ive worked on cars that have lived near the sea and they have been rotten every nut and bolt is seized solid, and thats just being near salt water not actualy init.

it is hard work to own a landy in the depths of cornwall.ive seen 6month old cars returned with barely any paint left on em...:eek:

i am very persistant in refitting everything with grease and a special mix of diesel wax and oil to treat my chassis.....:eek::eek::eek:
even plastic rusts here..no lie...:eek::eek::eek:
 
Disco exposed to salt water? Last winter most of our vehicles got covered in road salt and spray, same thing!

I'm a big fan of used engine oil, pressure wash the underside if there's a lot of muck, use for a few weeks to get some dirt back on and this will act as a base for oil to penetrate and stick to when you spray on the oil. As one of the other replies, you could also consider Dinitrol. Hammerite will only hide the problem for a while, oil will spread and stop rust if it's not too flaky.

I've a 1998 Xsara from new, never even replaced a brake pipe, all because of its annual oil spray. I'm in Northern Ireland which gets salty roads all winter, so I know oil works.
 
Pressure wash it several times , steam clean it if you can and if you can direct water, hot if possible, to the inside of the chassis the more the better. Salt is very soluable in water and even more so in hot water . When you are sure it is dry you can paint it if you wish and finish off with a good spray of waxoyl that has been warmed in a bucket of boiling water . If the rust is thick dilute the waxoyl with 10 % white spirit as this will thin the waxoyl even more and help it soak into the rust . It is oxygen that causes corrosion ( rust is iron oxide ) and water etc just speeds up the process . If you eliminate oxygen access to steel it will not rust . That is why engine oil works as it covers the metal surface and prevents access by oxygen and water etc . Regards Jonathan.

Goota be true. I looked at buying a new Discovery in Gibralter ( tax free). Couldnt do it. No car maker supplies new to dealerships on the rock. They buy them in from Spain. Its a lot like Portland Bill, surrounded by sea, and because water is imported from Spain, they wash the streets in sea water. No car unless it undersealed to death lasts much over the guarantee period for bodywork. If the salt air dont get you the seagull sh·t will.
