Hi, I have a series 2a running on 'Landi' lpg conversion. This saves lots of money, anyway, when the gas(lpg) runs out, and I change over to 'petrol', there is no difference, that is I can change it over while driving. The problem is, when I need to change it back to gas, it takes about 10 minutes of starting, to get going, in that time I almost drain the battery! I think most systems change over automatically, but I bought this vehicle already converted. Any ideas?? thanks

Is this with the standard 2 1/4 petrol engine? Do you notice any drop in power when running LPG? I've looked into running LPG before, but seemed to get the hint that you get a 10% drop in power from LPG - 10% of very little makes a big difference!

Have you tried starting it on petrol and then swapping over to lpg once the engine is warm?

Most if not all new systems start up this way to warm the engine before switching over to lpg.

I was told not to bother with LPG unless it is petrol injection, as you really need to start on petrol, to swap onto LPG when warm, this is not easy with a carb, or maybe easy is the wrong word, but not very effective, etc.

Sorry, I never meant to mean they don't run ok on it, just it is not as effective, as you have to swap over, having buttons to press etc, that came straight from the horses mouth, who runs the LPG conversion business, so I have trust in him knowing what he is on about! he did thousands of conversions a year! hehe
 
So... what you are saying is it will run fine on LPG, but you have to start on Petrol and manually switch over when its running ok???

Cus if that's the case that is no problem - that's just like the choke, in cold you start with it and as it goes you push it in, makes no difference, i quite like things to press / twist / etc. whilst driving along :)

If you go for a new system it should switch over automatically once the engine is warm.

I was always told never to start a cold engine on lpg, cant remember why now tho.
 
I think reason for not starting on LPG is because the vaporiser can freeze when the engine is running cold. Saying that though I always start on LPG and never switch - as did the guy who had it before me, and it was being used in the highlands then (very cold).
As for power loss, I don't notice any difference, except in my wallet!
 
hmm... I am tempted. I shall have to do some investigating into costs - any suggestions for companies / DIY kits etc...
 
hi ive been running mine on lpg for over a year now . never had any problems. if i need full power for green laning or offroading a switch to petrol. ive worked it out and it costs the same as my girlfriends 1.4 clio to fuel.
 
i got my kit from tinley tech and took me a weekend to fit. now ive done one i think it could be done in a day. very easy
 
Carbs are not as efficient as injection, and lpg is not as economic to run on in litres/mile. This is probably the reason why your lpg man said not to bother. It will also evaporate in the carb faster in the summer, hence cost the same or more than on petrol.

Injection is a different beast, as there is not 'wastage' as it were on multi-points.

As regards to starting problems - you have an older system, and it is on a carb. So in order to solve this, you must turn back onto petrol before you stop the vehicle and turn off. Just get into a habit of flicking back to petrol half a mile from your destination and this will give the carb a chance to burn the gas, and refill with petrol. After this, starting will not be a problem.

If you already do this, but still have the fault, then it will be the switchover relay sticking and keeping you on gas. You will know if it is, as it will take and age to start and backfire and pop etc.
