Series 3 Rubbing strip-spare wheel retention

I'm rebuilding a S3 88 - Page 2H02 in the Parts Catalog suggests I need 2 x Rubbing strips for Spare wheel retention... part no. 330212, and 6 rivets. I now have the stripes and they seem widely available, but I cannot see where they need to go? I have an old rotten one, so I know they were on the car somewhere before.

On my 88 the spare wheel is located in the bucket (rear body) behind the seats.

Any guidance would be incredible - thank you in advance

Although I cannot comment directly as I am not familiar with the factory setup for that I would assume they will go where the rim is likely to touch the bodywork similar to the rubber pads on the bonnet mounted spare. The rubber tyre does not needs protecting but once you have a flat the steel rim is likely to rub and damage any of the soft ali bodywork.

I thought there's just 4 circular rubbers pads for the wheel to sit on.
