OK so here goes.
I have a 200tdi and at the moment it is driving like i have a brake stuck on.It feels as thought i need to drop it down a gear all the time.
However if i free wheel it runs lovely and smooth.
I have checked and cleaned all the brakes and they are running free.The hand brake drum is cool after a run so rulled that out.I recently replaced the front prop as one of the uj's was on its way out.All the wheel bearings feel ok on jacking up and testing for any play.
After a run i have been under to try and find any heat build up in the drive train. Checked stub axle area and diffs on both axles all seem cool , transfer box seems cool to the touch.
I am now at a loss as to what to check.
I am going to drop rear prop off tonight and try to run it front wheel drive only (if i can get the centre diff to lock its a while since i used it).
My question is has anyone had this problem and can the point me in the right direction as to what to look at.

Give it a full service, oils, filters etc .. especially fuel filter. Makes a helluva difference .. ;)
 
wot he said above - most likely a fueling issue - I.E. it isn't getting enough:), but who is :D??
 
Having similar issues with my '200 D1 :(
although towing yesterday, not as powerful as normal was also getting bad economy - well, worse than normal towing but no smoke o_O
Lost power really shows up towing hossbox & hoss :mad:.

Time for air & fuel filters I think :cool:

Ok will give it a go.Air filter was done a few months ago along with oil and i have a spare fuel filter knocking about somewhere so will swap that.As above though no smoke or anything.
 
smoke tends to indicate over fueling, incomplete combustion due to the timing being out, or oil burning due to engine (bore) wear.

As you say, could also be lack of air, but likely to be accompanied by rather poor starting......
 
As an aside to this (I've been fiddling but not done filters yet :oops:)

Something I've been thinking about doing for ages is replacing the engines 'lift-pump' with an electric fuel pump, a few weeks / months ago I trial fitted an old (ex rallycar) facet 'silver top' pump with clear braided pipe to see if there was air in the line from tank to engine (a previous owner had removed the Sedimental from near the drivers rear wheelarch / chassis so I was concerned about air being drawn into the fuel system :rolleyes: )
Anyway, I have air in pipes :mad:
Time to get some new fuel pipe :(

Also something worth checking is the 'stop' solenoid on the inj pump, these can stick on an 'O' ring seal and possibly restrict fuel flow :confused:

Guess what I'm also going to change ;)

well i changed the fuel filter last night.It does seem to have a little more get up and go but still feels as though i keep needing to drop it down a gear.
 
As said above, check the air filter. Also check the air pipes for possible splits or defects and restrictions and check to see if your intercooler is blocked. And make sure the turbo actuator and wastegate is moving freely.

Personally I've not had a 200Tdi lift pump fail (yet) but I wouldn't rule that out, but from what you've said it sounds like an air flow problem.
