Looks like a tent......with a vehicle inside. Why? Buy a big tent, put it up next to your Landy.

Yep after this video i am swaying hard towards the Tuff-Trek soft top for me too. I would however like to know if anyone has had any dealings with Front Runner - https://overlandgear.uk/collections/camping-storage/products/roof-top-tent I have heard good things about them and is quite a chunk cheaper than the Tuff-Trek 'If' the quality is as good.
 
Frontrunner are one of the big South African manufacturers. Their stuff is tested in harsh conditions and they seem to have an excellent reputation for intelligent design and tough materials. The only thing I would say is that it is a very lightweight tent designed with an African market in mind and which may not be ideal for European conditions.

Roof tent takes less than a minute to put up, awning takes a wee bit longer if you want to peg it down or put the
sides on, putting a traditional tent up or down in pi$$ing rain & wind is a pita then you have to store it inside the
motor or trailer, then when your home you need to air it so then you put it back up again.
Everything on the roof is out the way & so simple to deal with. :)

If you're going on a homage to the Wilks family I'll wave to you when you pass, as I farm the land that Spencer's house is on. Also do you know that (Big) Duncan Fraser died a couple of years back?
 
Hi def90man, we'll definitely wave...in fact, you'd be welcome to join us for a mug tea and chocolate bourbons! :) didn't realise BDF had passed away, but this won't stop us having a great time. Doesn't the granddaughter of Maurice Wilks have a small distillery on the Isle...thought I'd read it somewhere...possibly Ben Fogle's book. Your message is quite timely as have just bought the Tuff-Trek TT02 tent and annex on eBay this evening. With an eBay coupon and Tuff-Trek discount have managed to pay £1295 instead of £1695 which is a cracking price for a new unit...the saving will go towards the fuel bill !! :eek:

It's Spencer's granddaughter Cathy has the distillery at Kilchoman. The Wilks family bought Laggan estate in the '30's and it was sold in about 2001, but Cathy and her husband bought the house when the estate was sold.
You can stay at Laggan in your new tent if you want. I'll hold you to a bourbon too:)

I did see that one but as above the rack looks too fragile and was unsure of the excess marks on the base of unit - if folk allow a brand new unit to be this marked I didn't want the interior marked/damaged too. The Land has an external Safety Devices roll cage so will either make a couple of extra cross bars or find a good solid rack to bolt to the cage
 
Up a little bit early today, the heavy duty rain proving better than the alarm clock :mad: so thought a little online research into roof tent mounting systems for anyone with a roll cage and came across these little beauties. hopefully they'll help others reading this thread in the future

Useful links thanks. You make a good point about the need for cross bars on a roll cage. I need to check with my lad that Whitbread are building those into the rack they are making.

Hi Dave, most tent manufacturers recommend at least three mounting points/cross bars for secure installation. The roll cage has only two cross bars where the tent will be mounted. I may contact Safety Devices and ask them to make an additional cross bar, or go buy some 40/45mm tube and make one myself...could do with some welding practice. This is the cage fitted to mine, you can see it only has two bars.
