whats the verdict on these??? (the ones from exmoor 4x4 on that auction site)

i've been contemplating one for a while and saw one on in the flesh the other day. i thought it looked alright (please bear in mind that i use my disco for shooting so the roof lights will be used properly, not just to blind passing motorists!!)

does anyone think that with chequer plate sidesteps, full front bull bars with driving lamps and a roof bar with 4 more very high powered bulbs it would look a bit too tonka toy-ish?????

also, how neatly can these be wired in?? as its used as a car 60/70% of the time i don't want it to look too scrappy with the wiring but i would like the 4 lamps to be on 3 switches (centre 2, left and right with the outer lamps twisted out slightly for a large field of view)
 
I've just put roof light bars on my disco and I must admit I think it really sets it off nicley. Of all the mods I've done so far its the one that makes it look like a "proper" off roader.
 
yer, ive just wired mine onto my 90. not sure how your going to go about seperate switching of the lights. you may need a relay for each lamp. ive used 2 and linked them together so all 4 come on together. wireing is easy to make it look tidy. id recomment using an outer sheath and running all cables in this along the bar and then in through one of the window seals (be carefull here) ive tucked mine under the dash and around to the centre console with red LED switches which come on when the application is on... looks awesome. dont know the dash on a disco so cnt comment on how easy it is.

just get the lights for now and see about the plating.

ive got an A bar 8"spots, roofbar. light grills, snorkel, and wingtop plates! yes it does look like a tonka :D but i got 2"lift, 265 grizzly claws and rocksliders which make it look IN place... if you know what i mean.

just do 1 at a time and see what you think. you can always sell it on flea bay if you dont like the look of it. ive seen stuff go for more on there than some of the web****es!

why will i need a relay???

i was gonna wire the earthe from all 4 to 1 point then take the +ve's from the middle two and join them, run each one (3 lines) through a switch each then wire into a supply that was tapped into 3 lines.

i have done this before for a light bar on a vw bug and had no problems with its function. what am i set to acheive by using a relay? (i am not planning on running the roof bar through the light system as they will only get turned on when i'm off road.)
 
Unless your switches are like those massive levers used to direct lightning strikes to Frankenstein I suggest you use relays and fuses. First of all most switches are only rated to take a couple of amps and spot lamps (good uns) take more amps than a switch can handle. (Ohms Law) Volts x Amps = Watts, so 100 watts divided by 12 volts = 8.3 amps. Result, switch contacts will arc inside everytime you operate them until they melt. Just in case the worse happens you want a fuse to each lamp or you'll watch your interior catch fire. Relays can carry 30 amps so they are better switches than the ones you want to use and they dont take much to install.
 
no. you must use a relay.
if u dont, then make sure you buy a fire extinguisher too.
 
ps.
make sure the main live/feed wire to the lamps, can handle the power requirements too.
 
so if i used somthing like a power lead like the one on my sub directly to the first light then run them in series across the bar with an earth to the body/chassis and have the lamps seperated by relays and or fuses we should be all go?
 
man this is confusing.

i just used 2 relays (1 for each pair) and wired to one switch. you could run the outer 2 and inner 2 to seperate relays and seperate switches. that should be easier. take a main feed from the batt, through the fuse box and upto the relays. then take a small feed from somewhere near your switches to your switches...

ormus, can you show him the diagram you showed me when you helped wire in my roof bar? cos its sorted now, and works a treat :D

sorry i cant explain further raz. all i know is that you should really use a relay (powered switch). hopefully ormus and his diagram will explain.

here is a guide to the size of wire required for wiring jobs.
length of wire is the maximum before voltage drop occurs.
 
thought this was better than startin a new fred for 1 answer, just on mm trying to order my spot lights but there is no defender option, i have a 91' 110. a disco 1 bar should fit shouldnt it?
 
Ive got brand new bar with four brand new 8x4 spots all wired up with defender lens caps. bought them a few weeks back put them on me 90 then decided against them,
do a search in items for sale ( new light bar and lights) if your interested make me an offer
 
would do wickford but i can get what i want for under £100 posted to me house so i wouldnt waste ur time. cheers anyway yeah
 
if u want i will scan the wirin diagram out of the haynes mods manual for spots on the light bar..... lets us no if u want me to jax n raz
