I’m looking to buy a Defender 110 Xs utility or SW , 2010 to 2013, 2.4 or 2.2 depending on year I find. My question is about the road fund licence cost, I would prefer to pay the lower tax if possible. I have been told by a dealer that all 2.2 Defenders are the lower road tax, but I have seen a 2012 110 Xs advertised quoting the higher tax bracket !! Also seen a late 2010 2.4 stating lower tax rate !! Can anyone cast any light on this please.
 
Thanks Gold rover, I had a look on there but found it a little confusing, I think it has a lot to do what it says on V5, but as I am just trawling ads looking for a car it is a long process.
 
If it’s classed as commercial then as far as I know it’s the lower tax, so utility or hard top are lower
 
That’s what I believed, maybe the auto trader ads give the wrong tax info, just pulls up what it thinks is correct.
Autotrader won't differentiate between commercial and non-commercial. It will just go by age , model, and engine size. So , unfortunately, you'll have to do it vehicle by vehicle. Good luck

Addit: Just been reading around and it 'seems' to be, that you have to use it for commercial purposes to qualify for lower tax. From the wording you don't get it just because the vehicle has panels , it is the use not the package that 'seems' to be the decider.

I bought my 110, 2010 utility new, this has the lower £250ish tax
Selling dealer never asked and no one else ever has either.
I bought this version as a 5 seater with covered boot/luggage area.

Again, reading around, buying new seems to have different rules, from second hand. The farmers' forums are full of posts on this particular minefield. Seems a lot of people struggle with it.

Not really, as a commercial user would also register for VAT reclaim.

I'm sure @Turboman and @NorfolkBird are connected to farming, maybe they know?

As far as I know, if a vehicle is registered as an agricultural vehicle, it pays zero VED, and can use red diesel within a certain radius of the farm where it is registered. But the exemption is for agricultural use, not normal daily driving.

If it is registered as a road vehicle, it has to pay normal VED as applies to that particular vehicle, but can be driven anywhere.

Thanks for info, my vehicle will just be registered for private road use dojo exemptions, really wanted to know if it would class as the higher or lower RFL, I think it will just have to be find a vehicle and check it’s rating.
 
The tax change affected Freelander 1's in 2006 but only some of them. Eye wonder if the same year caused changes fer tratters anorl?
 
Because I’m looking at buying a Defender and know there are different tax rates depending on year and model, I’d rather pay £250 a year rather than £550 a year. Was just asking
Who gives a rats azz, I mean FFS, you're worried about a couple hundred in road tax makes me think that a tight twunt who worries about that is the type who kills people because there's a few more mm on them brake pads and the cracks in them rotors are just superficial and that the canvas and steel showing through the tyres will give you better traction off road.

If you can't afford to tax it, you can't afford to run it let alone own it.
