There has been a slight leak from top of the thermostat for a while - topping up every couple of weeks depending on use. I had a look and jiggled some pipes and thought you know what I'm going to get my local garage to do this one!
Local garage diagnosed new thermostat and quoted over £350 so with a renewed sense of confidence I am going to tackle it myself.

Ive read a couple of posts but nothing that hits the mark so was wondering if there are any decent how to videos or good simple advice - Ive picked up on best idea is to remove the fan & get some proper hose clip pliers?
Any replies gratefully received.

The extended wire type hose clip pliers are all a bit crap, but they do the job.

A thermostat is an easy job mate. £350? Pullin the wool mate. I have a 300 tdi so don’t know much bout td5 but it can’t be too different to change out. Identify where it is and drain off the coolant a bit then undo housing to access the thermostat. Replace and put back in after cleaning faces of housing. Top up your antifreeze, check what type you need first, check your hoses. Pretty easy job. Haynes manual for the motor with TD5 is a great help. Some simple tools is a job done. If you were up my way I’d do for a coffee and four chocolate digestives. Do it yourself and build up the confidence in your abilities. Sorted. ✌🏻

That's great thanks mate & yes checked the Haynes & will follow that & save myself £350 plus 4 choccy digestives!

I am not saying the garage are wrong but if you have a leak form the thermostat it may not actually be the thermostat itself. When I had that on mine it was just one of the horrible wire clips had rusted through behind the pipe where you couldn't see it. Replaced with a proper jubilee clamp and the leak stopped. so might be worth replacing the clamps and seeing if it is still leaking. this can be done without removing fan etc.

The TD5 thermostat is not fixed to the engine block it is a Y piece unit in the radiator hoses, remove the radiator cowl for access and three jubilee clips the change the thermostat, easy job, even easier if fan removed but doable without. Special tools required to remove fan. Make sure you use correct OAT pink longlife antifreeze/coolant to top refill system Halfords is good.

Good point I'll try that, thanks.

So I tried fitting a jubilee but still leaking. Thermostat now ordered. I lost a lot of coolant over 5l while replacing the clip. Any pointers on minimising coolant loss when I replace the thermostat??

Unless your coolant is brand new treat it is a service/partial change, accept the loss and replace with new.

Not wishing to temp fate but I think I've done it!
Thanks for all the advice & Forest keep those biscuits dry!
One thing I have noticed is the temp gauge likes to rise & fall a bit quickly.
Chugging along flat and it's nearly tdc then power off going down hill it'll drop a quarter then up again with increased revs. Air in system?
