Hi everyone, I'm brand new to this forum and have only had my Freelander 1 for a few weeks. I'm just working through some niggly bits that need fixing & I need to replace the drivers door lock barrel (key won't even go in). I have a second hand barrel to fit & have the door card removed. I was hoping someone here might know how the barrel comes out? Thanks :)

Sorry mate, never swapped a barrel or even used one for that matter.
A quick search found this thread with a description of how to do it.

Good luck.

hi Alibro, thanks so much for your help, had a look at that thread & gonna give it a go tomorrow - I'll post my results here (hopefully with some pics if successful) ;)

Have you got the correct key for the new lock barrel? Or have you repinned it to match the ignition key.

It's better to have one key that fits all the locks. It's a pain to be working out what key fits what lock.

Why use the key anyway? Don't the fobs work?

Hi Welcome to Freelander ownership :)

In case you're not familiar with Freelander's transmission and the easy ways you can destroy your car, I'd have a quick read of this...

Hi GrumpyGel, thanks for the link & good advice :)
Mine's still got his prop shafts, he's an 02 plate but only done 45k miles & as far as I can see nothing much has been done! There's just quite a lot of age related little bits need TLC, like locks & seals etc. I'm getting there bit by bit ;)

Hi Nodge68,
The fobs work but the drivers lock looked like someone had a go with it with a screwdriver at some point and the tailgate lock wouldn't work either, so I was worried if the fob ever failed or the car battery went flat I'd be locked out! I've managed to change the drivers barrel today (fairly easy but a bit fiddly) & I have a full set of replacement locks & matching keys that I'm using so eventually just one key for all. The ignition is the one I'm reluctant to do as I'm not sure whether it will need reprogramming to the ecu? I noticed inside the keys (in the plastic housing at the top) there's a little chip & wondered if swapping those from the original key into the new keys would be enough for the car to recognise the key via the ignition?

It's pretty common for lock mechanisms to seize cause they're not used much. Have you given them a good dose of release oil?

Hi Alibro,
The lock was completely mangled unfortunately plus with the tailgate lock not working either I decided to change them all (just the tailgate & ignition left to do now) fuel cap and drivers lock barrels swapped today :)
the link you sent me was spot on, so thanks again, I didn't get any pics to post as I was really rushing, battling against the rain! :(

Not sure anyone here uses the boot door lock and if I recall it doesn't open the door anyway but is for operating the window.

Hi Alibro, thanks for posting, I did think that from stuff I've read but wasn't sure as it wasn't really clear. So to clarify, the locking barrel on the boot is solely there to operate the tailgate window? It doesn't unlock the boot door? When I put the key in it was turning but absolutely nothing happened, the window didn't open.

Ignition lock can be changed. You'll need to take the transponder out of the old keys, and fit them onto the new keys.

The boot lock only opens the boot door window. The key needs to be held for the window to open.

Hiya Nodge68,
Thanks for the info, it's all new to me but I think I'm learning
So am I correct in thinking the transponder is the tiny little chip like thing inside the plastic casing of the key?

Yes. The transponder is the tiny chip in the key. Put the old key transponder onto the new keys;)
