Hi all,

Need to replace the hub caps on my 1988 '90 as some oil escaping onto the rims.
Ordered replacement parts FRC4377 as this should be what I need for my chassis number, but when I came to swap them they seem slightly smaller than the originals - the flange on the back of the cap will not sit up against the shoulder on the hub.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can I persuade them into position with a hammer ??!!

They appear to be the same shape as the originals, but they are in a hard plastic whereas the originals are slightly more flexible/rubbery.

Rimmers sell the original land rover parts - would I have more luck with these than with Britpart copies?

Look forward to your advice.
 
Didn't have any problems with the Britpart ones I bought last year, they slipped on fine.

You have definately got the correct ones have you?
FRC4377 fit early vehicles and FTC5414 fit later ones. If you have been sent the short ones by mistake they won't fit the early axle.
 
I had to persuade mine into position with a hammer carefully until there was a nice click and are nice and tight, just like a nuns...
 
thanks, I'll try the hot water trick - had to use this method to fit replacement bonnet hinge bushes a few months ago!

Landy axles have an inner and an outer hub seal. It'll be these that are leaking, not the cap. You'll need to strip the hub down to replace them. I'd buy a Haynes manual if you're not sure.
 
I'm literally writing this after trying to do exactly the same to my 1986 defender 110 hub covers. The ones I had to replace the split rubber ones are hard plastic and as stated in the first post they don't sit flush against the hub and leave a gap that doesn't seem to be right.

The hub cap part number is FRC4377.

Am I reading this correctly and that with a little persuasion (hot water or otherwise) they will go even further on as there is a definitive click when I pushed them on even though they don't seem to be fully flush?

they are on the pre 300tdi axles ,which helped lubricate drive member splines ,300 tdi and td5 can and do suffer with wear on the splines due to the lack of lubrication
 
I will go with the others about the bowl of water, also and furthermore, I ran a tiny bead of black silicone around mine before popping them back into place and now nothing leaks past them.
 
I have a leaky rubber hub cap on my ex Army 90. The actual cap is cracked and the oil is leaking out. I bought a replacement cap nut it looks smaller and is plastic rather than rubber. Having read the above posts I shall re order, but is the oil leaking from a seal and is that perishing the rubber?
 
Not sure which axles/hubs you have but on the older Landies (200tdi and before) then oil leaking from the rubber hub cap and onto the outside of the wheel is because of the cap, a leaking seal would leak on the inside of the wheel, into drums etc. From 300tdi onwards it may be a seal!
